'The Witcher' Season 2 preview

4 years 10 months ago
Two years after its debut "The Witcher" returns to Netflix, looking every bit as brawny as its maiden flight and less messy structurally. Although the series developed a solid following (unlike some of the streamer's other recent fantasy efforts that met the executioner's ax), the show remains uneven and somewhat impenetrable to anyone not truly invested in it, which isn't helped by the long layoff.

'Finding Magic Mike,' stripped down to its message, is about men getting their mojo back

4 years 10 months ago
"Finding Magic Mike" -- a reality-competition show spun out of the movies about male strippers -- might not sound like something you'd find on top of a conservative list of viewing recommendations. Look a little closer, though, and this HBO Max series keeps returning to the idea of men and their essence somehow being under siege, which has become a conservative talking point.

'Shatner in Space' joins William Shatner on his trip to the final frontier

4 years 10 months ago
There are two equally valid reactions to "Shatner in Space," an Amazon special about William Shatner's recent flight aboard Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin: A cynical one, with Amazon essentially using the "Star Trek" actor as a living product placement; and a more generous read seeing the 90-year-old Shatner giddily reaching the final frontier, this time for real.

'The King's Man' seeks to expand the spy franchise, but this prequel just might end it

4 years 10 months ago
"The King's Man" is a prequel to the "Kingsman" movies, but its closest spiritual kin would be "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," another film based on a graphic novel that brought the superhero/spy genre into an earlier era and mostly flubbed the migration process. Fun in places, this World War I era story was designed to expand the franchise but appears just as likely to end it.

'Spider-Man: No Way Home' finds the sweet spot in Marvel's multiverse

4 years 10 months ago
After the lengthy buildup, array of teases and alleged leaks, "Spider-Man: No Way Home" impressively lives up to the hype, delivering the kind of unabashed big-screen fun for which theaters have been hungering. Briskly balancing a dizzying assortment of parts, Marvel's latest (by way of Sony) looks destined to do what only a spider can -- namely, lure vast numbers of fans into its web.
