Barrick Secures 15 Year License Renewal for Tanzania Mine

1 week 2 days ago
The Tanzanian government has renewed Barrick Mining's (TSX:ABX,NYSE:B) special mining licenses for the North Mara gold mine for 15 years, securing the company's operating rights at the site through 2041.Barrick operates North Mara through Twiga Minerals, a joint venture established in 2019 that grants the Tanzanian government a 16 percent free-carried interest and mandates an equal split of the economic benefits.“This is an important milestone for North Mara and for our partnership with Tanzania,” Seb Bock, CEO of Barrick’s Rest of World business, said in the announcement. “Since 2019, we’ve worked with the Government of Tanzania and local communities to build a stronger partnership and to create more opportunities for all Tanzanians. At the core of our business is building partnerships of real depth and trust with all stakeholders, and this renewal reflects that commitment.”Since assuming control of the operations five years ago, Barrick has invested approximately US$5.3 billion into the national economy. In 2025 alone, Barrick contributed US$1.2 billion through taxes, royalties, salaries, dividends, and local procurement. The government subsequently recognized the company as its top dividend payer and highest revenue contributor for the year. The workforce at North Mara now consists of 96 percent Tanzanian nationals, with nearly half drawn from the immediate communities surrounding the mine. Furthermore, indigenous and locally registered companies fulfill more than 90 percent of the site's procurement requirements. The license renewal is only trailed by the recent resolution of labor tensions at another major Barrick operation in West Africa. Last week, the company signed a new collective bargaining agreement with unions at the Loulo-Gounkoto gold mine in Mali, averting a planned work stoppage."We confirm that we have signed a new Collective Bargaining Agreement with the LG unions," a Barrick spokesperson stated on Sunday.Workers at Somilo SA, Gounkoto SA, and catering contractor Food & Events Africa had threatened to strike by late September if management failed to address 15 demands, including overtime pay, mission expense reimbursements, and the implementation of prior labor agreements.Mali, a leading African gold producer, introduced a revised mining code in 2023 to increase state revenues from natural resources. Operating under the military-led government, Barrick temporarily suspended operations in January 2025 amid the arrests of several employees and an arrest warrant for the company's former CEO Mark Bristow over alleged financial crimes. The company ultimately resolved a two year dispute with Bamako over profit sharing and operational control in November 2025.Don't forget to follow us @INN_Resource for real-time updates!Securities Disclosure: I, Giann Liguid, hold no direct investment interest in any company mentioned in this article.

Top 5 Canadian Mining Stocks This Week: 55 North Gold Gains 89 Percent

1 week 5 days ago
Welcome to the Investing News Network's weekly look at the best-performing Canadian mining stocks on the TSX, TSXV and CSE, starting with a round-up of Canadian news impacting the resource sector.Statistics Canada released Canada’s gross domestic product by industry data for July on Tuesday (September 29). Overall, Canada’s economic growth stalled, recording no change on a month-to-month basis, after increasing 0.3 percent in June. The construction and utilities sectors were bright spots, posting increases of 1.3 percent and 1.7 percent, respectively; however, they were offset by decreases in manufacturing and retail trade, which shrank 0.9 percent and 1 percent. The biggest contributor to the manufacturing drop was a decline in petroleum refining due to unexpected downtime at a refinery. The declines came before escalations in the trade war between Canada and the US, which saw the US impose tariffs on a host of previously exempted goods at the end of August. The resource sector also experienced broad declines, and pulled back 0.5 percent overall month-over-month. The oil and gas sector contracted 3 percent led by a 0.7 percent decrease in oil and gas extraction, which was offset by a 0.2 percent increase in the oil sands extraction subsector. Mining and quarrying also slowed 1 percent, largely driven by a 6.4 percent in potash mining, owed to lower output from Saskatchewan and potash exports slowing. Metals mining was down 1.1 percent, as gold and silver production declined 2.8 percent, which came alongside a drop in exports. Additionally, a shutdown of Cameco’s Cigar Lake processing plant in Saskatchewan caused disruptions to uranium production in early July. Offsetting the decreases was a 6.5 percent increase in copper, nickel, lead and zinc mining, and a 3.3 percent increase in iron ore output. On Friday (October 2), Reuters reported that China was requesting firm copper supply commitments prior to approving a proposed merger between mining giants Teck Resources (TSX:TECK.A,TECK.B,NYSE:TECK) and Anglo American (LSE:AAL,OTCQX:NGLOY). The report indicates that antitrust regulators have leveraged their power to protect domestic industrial supply in the past. China’s refined copper growth has slowed significantly as global mining output has been disrupted over the past few years. China’s approval is the last major hurdle to completing the merger, originally announced in September 2025. Once complete, the combined companies will control about 5 percent of global copper supply, which Reuters notes is below the 10 to 15 percent competition threshold. Sigma Lithium Temporarily Halts Operations in Brazil

1 week 5 days ago
Sigma Lithium (TSXV:SGML,NASDAQ:SGML) announced a temporary suspension of all mining and industrial production at its operations in Brazil, citing an "atypical 15-day delay" by the Federal Court of Appeals in reviewing the company’s emergency legal defense against an environmental injunction. The suspension forces the producer of lithium oxide concentrate to delay its 12-month production guidance of 240,000 tons by three months. The company nevertheless maintained its fiscal 2027 production target of 330,000 tons.Sigma Lithium will maintain its commercial recycling operations and generate cash flow by selling high-purity lithium fines derived from dry stacked tailings as a means of self-funding during the operational halt. The pause stems from a preliminary emergency injunction issued by a local federal judge in Teofilo Otoni during a holiday weekend, which in turn resulted from a lawsuit filed by the NGO Ngolo that requested Minas Gerais state authorities to suspend Sigma Lithium's environmental licenses. The NGO alleged the Grota do Cirilo complex negatively impacts a nearby Quilombola community, a rural heritage settlement established by descendants of enslaved Afro-Brazilians. The lawsuit also named the State Government of Minas Gerais, the state environmental authority (FEAM), and the federal traditional communities body (INCRA) as defendants for evaluating and granting the licenses since 2019.Sigma Lithium challenged the injunction, arguing its constitutional right to present a legal defense was violated when the local court failed to serve legal communication until nearly a week after the ruling was issued. The company stated the court also denied previous requests for independent expert technical evidence to evaluate atmospheric, water, acoustic, and structural impacts on the community.According to the company, the Grota do Cirilo complex operates outside the legally mandated environmental impact perimeter. Sigma Lithium stated the settlement's houses are situated on the opposite bank of the Jequitinhonha River, approximately 8 to 11 kilometers from the active mining pits. The company alleges the lawsuit’s claim of a 2.7-kilometer proximity relies on an "anomalous measurement 30x larger than the original baseline," derived from a self-proclaimed technical report that allocated 1.5 square kilometers for each alleged Quilombola family.Sigma Lithium warned that the upcoming second round of Brazil’s general elections on October 25 introduces the risk of a delayed or negatively biased appellate ruling against the mining industry. Should the Federal Court of Appeals uphold the injunction, the company stated it would seek a secondary appeal in the superior federal courts. In August, Sigma Lithium fully resumed its mining and industrial operations after signing a Terms for Adjustment of Procedures (TAC) agreement with the State of Minas Gerais. As part of the settlement, the company committed approximately US$1 million in capital expenditures of environmental adjustments and agreed to pay US$540,000 for environmental fines.Shares of Sigma Lithium slipped to C$11.16 following the Thursday (October 1) curtailment announcement. Currently shares are trading at C$12.24, as of 12:57 p.m. ET. The NPCA requested the injunction while a lawsuit was brought before courts challenging the Department of the Interior's 2025 decision to allow operations to resume under an old mine plan instead of requiring a new one with updated environmental assessments. The NPCA stated that the mine posed a threat to the Mojave National Preserve’s desert landscape and public access to the preserve. Then, on September 18, Dateline filed a motion to stay the injunction while it appeals. On Monday, Dateline announced that the US Department of Justice had filed its own motion seeking a stay. The government argued the injunction harms US national security, and asked that Dateline be allowed to resume operations under its approved plan of operations while the appeal proceeds. The motion is supported by a declaration from the US Department of Defense’s assistant secretary for industrial base policy, which cited Colosseum’s proximity to Mountain Pass and the importance of domestic rare earths supply.
