Microsoft Is Awarded US Patent for Crypto Token-Creation Service

5 years 2 months ago

Microsoft has been awarded a U.S. patent for software it says can help users develop blockchain applications by making it easier and more efficient to create crypto tokens for different distributed ledgers.

  • According to the patent, creating and managing tokens is currently “difficult and cumbersome” due to the lack of standardization across different blockchains.
  • Microsoft’s patent describes a ledger-independent system for helping users to create tokens, and for managing them across different networks.
  • On receiving a request from a user, the system offers templates with various attributes and control functions. Those would depend on the type of token required, representing, for example, a digital or physical asset. Once the user has selected the desired template, the system creates the token on the designated networks.
  • The system also provides a common interface for managing the tokens, so developers don’t have to worry about token-specific code to interact with them.

India’s Securities Watchdog to Launch System for Monitoring Financial Instruments

5 years 2 months ago

India’s securities watchdog plans to lean heavily on distributed ledger technology for the monitoring and recording of financial instruments, beginning next year.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) announced Wednesday its intentions to roll out a system for “security and covenant monitoring” for non-convertible debentures (NCDs) by April 1, 2022.

It marks a significant step for the use case of blockchain within India’s financial ecosystem and follows other major institutions in leveraging the technology for increased systems efficiency.

Related: Stock and Crypto Investor Sign-Ups Jump 45% Year-on-Year Across Rural India: Report

NCDs are financial instruments that recognize a debt obligation toward the issuer. Typically a debenture is a long-term instrument with a feature that allows it to be cashed in for shares at a later date at the discretion of the owner. Debentures that cannot be converted into shares are considered “non-convertible” products.

The system will also keep tabs on covenants – terms inserted into a debt agreement – and will monitor the credit ratings of the NCDs. The system will provide necessary permission to trustees, issuers, and credit rating agencies to update transaction data. In turn, the data will be accessible to stock exchanges and depositories to provide for a more transparent process.

Data stored will be cryptographically signed, time-stamped, and sequentially added to the ledger, leaving behind a verifiable audit trail of transactions. Transaction history and data on the ledger will be “fully” encrypted and will be shared only with necessary stakeholders on a “need-to-know basis,” SEBI said in its statement.

“DLT has the potential to provide a more resilient system than traditional centralized databases and offer better protection against different types of cyber-attacks because of its distributed nature, which removes the single point of attack,” the watchdog said.

Can Avalanche Keep It Up? DeFi Users Rush In as Incentives Roll Out

5 years 2 months ago

In an explosive move reminiscent of the growth of Binance Smart Chain (BSC) and Polygon earlier this year, the Avalanche blockchain is attracting a flood of new deposits into its decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem.

Despite the signs of strength, however, not all analysts are convinced the Ethereum competitor has staying power.

At the end of July, Avalanche’s DeFi ecosystem accounted for just $180 million in total value locked (TVL) – a figure that has since ballooned 1,000% to over $1.8 billion at the time of writing. Likewise, Avalanche’s native token, AVAX, has rallied from $13.41 to a high of $55.42 earlier this week.

Related: Market Wrap: Bitcoin Back Above $48K, Expect Consolidation

Money market Benqi is leading the way, cracking the $1 billion TVL threshold Tuesday – less than a week after its Aug. 19 launch. By comparison, Aave, among the first DeFi lending protocols when it launched in 2019, took more than eight months to reach the same mark on Ethereum.

In an interview with CoinDesk, Ava Labs Director of DeFi Luigi Demeo said that a number of factors, including a revamped token bridge and a $180 million incentive program, are chief catalysts for the surge.

“We’ve kind of seen all these things culminate at once, between the bridge, lending, a massive incentive program and a lot of things the team has been working on very deeply, heads down, for six months,” he said.

However, Mewny, a self-described “Internet Couch” and a pseudonymous member of the angel investing collective eGirl Capital, cautioned that the burgeoning ecosystem could be due for an eventual pullback.

Related: Solana’s Apricot Finance Raises $4M in ‘Party’ Funding Round

“It could go one of two ways,” Mewny told CoinDesk, speaking to the roving horde of DeFi investors. “The [liquidity mining] incentives kickstart a flywheel effect around their ecosystem, or enthusiasm dries up and the hot ball of money moves to the next pot of honey.”

Incentives and catalysts

The timing of Avalanche’s emergence is something of a surprise, given that the layer 1 went live on mainnet in September 2020 and had a functioning (if clunky) bridge as early as February this year.

“The UX wasn’t great,” Ava Labs’ Demeo said. “It was slower, more extensive… it was a temporary solution, frankly.”

Additionally, Demeo said that the ecosystem was missing “key infrastructure pieces,” including oracles, a faster bridge, a lending platform and stablecoin support.

Chainlink oracles went live July 21, providing the pricing data infrastructure that allowed Benqi’s lending platform to launch. Money market Aave will soon be joining with $20 million in liquidity mining incentives; Curve, a protocol allowing for efficient stablecoin swaps, is also signing on with $7 million in AVAX liquidity mining rewards.

Demeo added that the new bridge provides free AVAX (for deposits above a certain amount) to pay for subsequent transactions.

While Demeo refers to Ethereum-native dapps such as Curve, Sushi and Aave deploying implementations on Avalanche as a “validation of the technology,” eGirl’s Mewny says other layer 1s paved the way for Avalanche’s success.

“I think BSC and Polygon set the stage for this current AVAX run. The relationship between the [liquidity mining] incentives that dropped and the rapid TVL that bridged is obviously no coincidence,” they said, adding:

“While I think the tech is interesting and this isn’t a negative comment on its technical merits, many people saw the green light to capture the gains that were seen with the aforementioned platforms. As money trickles in to play the casino yield farms and/or long the same basic DeFi primitives but on a new platform, the same playbook is possible (yet again).”

Future developments

Demeo argues that Avalanche has built-in technical advantages that will allow it to compete in the long term, including a unique consensus mechanism and architecture.

“A key fundamental decision was to allow for multiple subchains, which should let AVAX easily integrate any virtual machine or smart-contracting language,” he said. “This should be a competitive advantage for long-term sustainability [allowing] AVAX to pivot easily to capture different devs.”

Additionally, Demeo said the $180 million Avalanche Rush program is currently tailored to users. Over time, the money could be used to incentivize developers to build more platforms on Avalanche. He said a user base is a necessary first step.

What Binance Smart Chain’s Lagging Performance Means for Layer 1 Blockchains

5 years 2 months ago

It was not long ago when Binance Smart Chain (BSC)  was beating Ethereum by several blockchain metrics, but the former Ethereum alternative darling has seen its growth slow amid intensified layer 1 blockchain competition.

A growing number of “rug pulls” or exploits on BSC, meanwhile, has also raised questions around BSC’s security, as some BSC users have left the platform over fears about the safety of their funds, according to analysts.

BSC’s challenges show that while attracting new capital via cheaper, faster transactions is a  first key step for any smart contract blockchain, security and decentralization are still essential for retaining users in the long run.

Although still the No. 2 blockchain by total value locked (TVL), the layer 1 blockchain supported by crypto exchange Binance, is far off its all-time TVL high in early May. TVL is the amount of crypto assets that are locked in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols on the blockchain.

Other layer 1 blockchains, including Solana, Terra, and Avalanche, have hit record TVL highs in the past week.

Although Binance founder and CEO Changpen Zhao has not been shy on social media about BSC outperforming Ethereum, a BSC spokesperson told CoinDesk that BSC “does not compete” with other blockchains.

“TVL growth and retracements are driven by several factors, including importantly and primarily market conditions, which are very different from what it was when BSC’s TVL was at its all-time high,” Samy Karim, BSC’s ecosystem coordinator, told CoinDesk via Telegram messages.

Related: Market Wrap: Bitcoin Back Above $48K, Expect Consolidation

“TVL alone does not indicate the health or performance of BSC’s DeFi ecosystem,” Karim argued.

Messari’s second quarter review on layer 1 blockchains highlighted that BSC was particularly hurt by the May market crash because most of the value locked on BSC was money-oriented capital looking for liquidity mining rewards, and the majority of assets on BSC had few use cases.

According to data from DeFi Llama, the top protocols by TVL on BSC are decentralized exchange PancakeSwap and lending protocol Venus. Both have plateaued since the TVL declined dramatically in early May.

Venus protocol faced more than $200 million worth of liquidations in late May, possibly due to a price manipulation of its native venus token. Meanwhile, PancakeSwap was taken advantage of in a flash loan exploitation worth about $45 million on another BSC-based DeFi protocol, PancakeBunny.

“BSC should’ve just rebranded to Binance Rug Chain,” Ryan Watkins, research analyst at Messari, said dryly,  noting that the growing number of hacks on BSC-based protocols has scared away users.

In a Telegram chat, Venus’ global community deputy, “Danny,” who did not disclose their full name, told CoinDesk that the Venus team is working on several upgrades to improve its security.

“Once all the major changes have been completed, we will return to normal growth, most likely much faster than anticipated by others,” they said.

Rupert Douglas, head of institutional sales at another popular BSC-based DeFi protocol Alpaca Finance, argued that the increased number of attacks on BSC is “in approximate proportion to the sizes of the blockchains,” who noted that BSC is not the only blockchain that has suffered exploitations and failures.

“As networks grow, more suitable targets emerge for hackers to look at,” Douglas said. “The more high-TVL projects there are, the greater the number of hackers that will poke at their code for potential exploits. All of these emerging networks haven’t hit that point yet since the majority of them only have one to three projects with significant TVL.”

Nate George, crypto asset analyst at Cumberland, the Chicago-based crypto trading unit of DRW Holdings LLC, argued that in developing layer 1 blockchains, one of the three fundamentals, scalability, security and decentralization, has to be sacrificed to optimize the other two, a so-called blockchain trilemma. In BSC’s case, decentralization was sacrificed.

The BSC blockchain’s security algorithm, known as Proof-Of-Staked-Authority (PoSA), is controlled by 21 node operators who are mainly controlled by Binance. BSC’s rise came as Ethereum’s network became too congested and its gas fees skyrocketed. Gas refers to the computational efforts required to execute specific operations on a blockchain like Ethereum. Users must pay a fee in the blockchain’s native token to conduct a transaction.

Binance’s Zhao said in an interview with CoinDesk last year that the company had to sacrifice elements of decentralization to compete against Ethereum in designing BSC.

“There is a trade-off between more decentralization versus speed, so we thought that 21 nodes run by the community is probably enough,” Zhao said in the interview.

Venus’ Danny told CoinDesk that BSC’s  fast speed and low fees are among the reasons Venus chose the platform, enabling it to provide users, including those in developing countries, with easy access to Venus’ lending and borrowing services.

BSC’s Karim said that for BSC to continue its “momentum,” the team at BSC and the protocols on BSC need to introduce “advanced security layers and build better user awareness.”

AriseCoin Inventor Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Securities Fraud

5 years 2 months ago

Jared Rice, Sr., the inventor of AriseCoin, was sentenced to five years in federal prison on Wednesday for his role in a scam that bilked investors out of $4.25 million.

Rice, 33, was also the CEO of AriseBank, described as the world’s “first decentralized banking platform.”

Hundreds of investors spent a collective $4.25 million in fiat currency and cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ether to purchase AriseCoin. Rice must pay that amount in restitution, according to the sentencing.

Although Rice told investors that accounts at AriseBank were FDIC-insured and that the bank would issue Visa-brand credit cards, AriseBank was not authorized to conduct banking in Texas, was not FDIC insured, and was not partnered with Visa.

Rice was arrested in Texas in 2018 and  pleaded guilty to one count of securities fraud in 2019.

Instead of investing the money in AriseBank, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says Rice spent investor funds on personal items, including hotels, food, transportation and attorney fees.

Rice previously pled guilty to state felony charges related to a previous “internet-related business scheme,” which he did not disclose to investors.

Market Wrap: Bitcoin Back Above $48K, Expect Consolidation

5 years 2 months ago

Bitcoin is back above $48,000 as buyers responded to intraday oversold signals. The world’s largest cryptocurrency is up about 9% over the past week, compared with a 7% rise in ether and a 30% rise in Cardano’s ADA. The bounce in cryptocurrencies occurred alongside gains in stocks on Wednesday.

Despite lower trading volume, analysts expect cryptocurrencies to consolidate near highs before buyers return for the next leg up.

EToro, a multi-asset brokerage, released second-quarter earnings Wednesday, reporting $362 million in trading commissions, a 125% year-over-year increase. Yoni Assia, eToro’s co-founder and CEO, told CoinDesk that traders have been diversifying across cryptos and stocks this year.

The platform’s retail customers never really dropped out of the market during the price correction a few months ago, Assia said. “The majority held through and continued to hold/add to cryptos,” he said.

Bearish bitcoin bets

Hedge funds and other large traders continued to pile into bearish bets on bitcoin last week. The tally of short positions has increased by 6,000 since July 20 to hit the highest in three months. But the data doesn’t necessarily indicate that the traders are betting on outright price declines.

Related: AriseCoin Inventor Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Securities Fraud

The spike in leverage funds’ short bets might have stemmed from a return of the so-called carry trade, which involves buying the cryptocurrency in the spot market against a short position in the futures market.

That means bitcoin market makers may be short on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and hedged on native exchanges, reports CoinDesk’s Omkar Godbole.

Subdued trading volume

The seven-day average real BTC trading volume is still around $5 billion, less than half of what the market witnessed the last time bitcoin was at $50,000, Arcane Research analysts wrote Tuesday in a report.

If trading volume continues to be relatively flat and bitcoin prices push higher, the market could become exhausted and the rally won’t be sustainable, the analysts said.

Cardano vs. ether

ADA is pulling back from an all-time high around $3 and could find lower support between $2.40-$2.60. The cryptocurrency remains in breakout mode after successfully holding the 200-day moving average in July.

Some analysts view Cardano, Solana, Terra and others as direct competitors to Ethereum.

“These blockchains are dubbed ‘Layer 1’ as they provide two main functionalities – settling on-chain financial activity and launching decentralized applications,” digital asset manager 21Shares wrote in a newsletter Tuesday.

“We believe this rise of Layer 1 [cryptos] outside Ethereum is predominantly driven and hyped by retail investors since institutional-grade investment products on these underlying assets are only available in our product suite, except for Luna, which no issuers offer at the moment,” 21Shares wrote.

ADA also broke out relative to ETH on Aug. 17. The ADA/ETH ratio appears overbought, but will likely hold support given renewed upside momentum in ADA.

DeFi stablecoin lending rates rise

The stablecoin lending rates in the decentralized finance (DeFi) market is ticking up, according to crypto data analytics firm Skew.

The increase could be short term but is worth watching closely, said Dan Weiskopf, co-portfolio manager of the Amplify Transformational Data Sharing ETF at Toroso Asset Management.

“If the doubling of the yield from the 3% to 4% range continues, there could be an issue in the promised land; nothing is free and getting paid a lot for something that is stable could be a sign of something to come,” Weiskopf wrote to CoinDesk.

”This increase is also curious after July’s lull in trading activity, so we will be watching for volatility,” Weiskopf noted.

Bitcoin Mining Difficulty Rises, Extending Recovery After China Crackdown

5 years 2 months ago

Bitcoin’s mining difficulty – a measure of the amount of computing resources required to mine bitcoin – has increased for the third time in a row in yet another sign of the network’s staying power following a crackdown on the industry earlier this year by authorities in China.

Mining difficulty is a key element of the Bitcoin blockchain’s built-in self-stabilizing mechanisms. When more crypto miners are operating on the network, blocks tend to be discovered or mined more quickly. As miners drop off the network, they are found less frequently. To compensate, the blockchain’s programming automatically adjusts periodically to ensure that data blocks continue to get mined on average every 10 minutes or so. This process was hard-coded into the Bitcoin blockchain’s original programming when the network was launched over a decade ago.

At 14:41 UTC on Wednesday, the blockchain’s mining difficulty increased by 13.2% at block 697,536, according to several mining sites.

Related: AriseCoin Inventor Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Securities Fraud

The latest increase in the bitcoin mining difficulty comes as some operators creep back online after previously dropping off the network following China’s crackdown and as North American miners expand capacity.

The Bitcoin mining difficulty resets roughly every two weeks and is a key gauge of the network’s health as well as a crucial factor in determining miners’ profit margins.

As bitcoin’s hashrate, a measure of the total computational power being used to secure the blockchain network, hit a low point a couple months ago, bitcoin’s difficulty level recorded its largest drop in history, on July 3.

The 14-day moving average of the bitcoin hashrate has rebounded roughly 25% from its low point in late June, according to Arcane Research. The number stood at 123 exahashes per second on Tuesday, according to data from Glassnode. An exahash represents a quadrillion computations.

Even though the Bitcoin mining difficulty has been increasing, it’s still a good time for miners, industry experts said.

“Bitcoin mining has never been more profitable,” said Dave Perrill, CEO at crypto mining colocation company Compute North. “Look at the percentage of price run that bitcoin had over the last 12 months and look at the hashrate percentage increase, and it’s nowhere near in line.”

Bitcoin was trading at $48,899 as of press time, up 1.86% over the past 24 hours.

SEC Official Calls Crypto Scams the ‘Flavor of the Year’

5 years 2 months ago

A U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) official called crypto scams the “flavor of the year” at a virtual event on consumer fraud Wednesday, according to a report from MarketWatch.

  • Peter Diskin, an assistant regional director at the SEC’s Atlanta office, said that fraudsters leverage popular sectors such as crypto to get the attention of victims.
  • Diskin pointed out that international criminals have a leg up with crypto scams, because the online and global nature of digital assets can make scams harder to spot and stop.
  • “Not infrequently the money can be removed from U.S. bank accounts and go overseas, which makes it even more difficult to recoup things if something goes wrong,” Diskin said.
  • Diskin also discussed the prevalence of celebrity endorsements in the crypto world, many of which have been tied to scams, such as actor Steven Segal’s promotion of a fraudulent initial coin offering.
  • Reports of crypto scams have soared recently, with nearly 7,000 people reporting total losses of more than $80 million to the Federal Trade Commission between last October and May, according to a report cited by MarketWatch. The reported median loss was $1,900.

Bitcoin Miners Hold Onto Rigs, Betting the Bull Run Will Continue

5 years 2 months ago

Some bitcoin miners are sitting on their mining rigs in the hopes of selling them at a higher price as bitcoin’s rally continues.

“I know there is supply available,” said Vincent Vuong, director of sales and procurement at bitcoin mining and hosting company Compass Mining. “I talked to a lot of people. They all have thousands of units but nobody is willing to sell them.”

China’s crackdown on crypto mining sent mining rigs’ prices plummeting a few months ago, but the machines are now trading at a premium thanks to bitcoin’s recent bull run.

Related: AriseCoin Inventor Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Securities Fraud

In recent weeks, bitcoin has seen some of its largest gains this year, boosting sellers’ confidence in the machines’ prices in the future.

Mining machines manufacturers like Bitmain and MicroBT allow their clients to pre-order the rigs and hold futures contracts for batches of machines that will be delivered on a predetermined future date. This practice has become more common as the coronavirus pandemic has slowed global logistics and created a crunch on the supply chain for materials to make the machines.

The practice has come about also because major chip suppliers such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. have relatively small quotas for specified chips for bitcoin mining machine makers.

Both futures and spot markets for mining machines have already seen a significant increase in mining machines’ prices, signaling miners’ bullish expectations on the largest cryptocurrency’s price, according to industry pros.

Related: Market Wrap: Bitcoin Back Above $48K, Expect Consolidation

Thus, there has been a dynamic futures contracts market for miners, brokers and speculators, who are making trades based on bitcoin prices and other factors that affect machines’ profitability like electricity costs.

“One of the major bellwethers for bitcoin’s market is the mining machines’ futures market,” said Franky Hu, chief business development officer at MyRig, a miner hosting services provider based in Russia. “When futures contracts of mining rigs are trading at a much higher price than current price, miners are betting on higher bitcoin prices, which leads to a wider profit margin.”

Rig prices across the secondary spot market appear to have bottomed out in July and have risen for three weeks in a row. The prices for different mining machines saw a 7.5% increase on average last week, the biggest jump since the rebound, according to the Rig Price Index by Seattle-based mining company Luxor.

The growth rate of the price of rigs in the secondary market indicates buyers are pricing machines based on a bullish outlook for a bitcoin price that can lead to wider profit margins, Ethan Vera, Luxor’s chief operating officer, said.

The price of the rigs is being set not only by how much the machinery itself is worth, but also by the expected profitability driven by market sentiment regarding the price of the bitcoin those machines could mine.

“Over the past three weeks, the rig prices have outrun bitcoin price; it shows that it is not purely based on current economics, but also future sentiment,” Vera said.

The upside

Early this week, bitcoin recrossed above $50,000 and has been logging gains for five consecutive weeks, which marks its longest weekly winning streak in nine months.

“When bitcoin price goes up, nobody has the incentive to sell their machines,” Vuong said. “There is a lot of upside potential.”

Miners and brokers raked in big profits during bitcoin’s bull runs in the past by making well-timed trades, Vuong said.

For example, the S9, which is one of the older models of mining machines made by Bitmain, was selling for up to $20, before last year’s bull run. However, at the peak of the rally in late 2020, the same machines were selling for $600 to $700, which is 30 to 35 times higher, Vuong said.

Trading mining rigs has become more strategic over time. Vuong even suggested that someone trading hardware might have been able to make more money than actually buying and holding bitcoin itself.

Even in the short-term bearish market, some sellers are opting to wait it out by running their mining machines on a hosting site. Doing so can generate daily profits, which can buy them more time while they wait for the bear market to pass, Vuong said.

What’s more, the sellers are generally able to realize a higher sale price on machines that are already plugged in. “The machine on the shelf is more valuable than those in the warehouse,” he said.

Chinese bitcoin miners calm down

Chinese miners were enthusiastic resellers in the first few months after the ban, resulting in a glut of secondhand machines in the market, according to Vera.

The State Council of China called for a sweeping ban on crypto mining and trading in May, creating a massive market of used mining machines, Vera said.

Some of the large Chinese miners had been running mega mining farms, generating over 1 exahashes per second (EH/s) before the crackdown. After, around one million mining rigs went offline in China, according to Vera’s estimates.  Exahashes is a measure of the computational power of a mining machine, which is a heavy-duty computer used to try to solve math problems in order to gain newly minted bitcoin. The computers also process bitcoin transactions.

“The ban forced them to unplug all their machines, which means they could lose millions of dollars everyday,” Vera said.

But now, miners are thinking longer term. “Miners are overall more patient in China, less frantic than they once were when the ban happened,” Vera said.

“They have come to terms with the fact that they are going to lose out on profitability this year and [are spending] more time thinking about how they are going to run their future operations.”

Arbitrage on bitcoin mining rigs

The massive market of used rigs has a price arbitrage mechanism that allows brokers to factor bitcoin’s price into how much a machine might sell for.

At 11 every morning in Beijing, brokers in China update prices for mining machines and relay that information to brokers in North America. That daily update enables miners and brokers in China to factor bitcoin’s price into their rigs’ prices in a matter of hours.

“Whenever the bitcoin price goes up, the machine prices would increase in the next couple of hours,” Vuong said. “No seller would honor the deal with buyers for more than a day unless the two parties have a really good relationship.”

While it could take just a few hours to raise rigs’ prices, it generally takes two to three weeks for them to fall after bitcoin prices drop, giving sellers enough time to adjust their prices.

“Once you saw bitcoin price dropping to around $30,000, it took more than three to four weeks before we started to see the hardware prices start to drop,” Vuong said.

Yet the risk for holding mining rigs still exists because the machines depreciate in value as they tend to deteriorate over time, and miners might lose money sitting on a pile of machines in a warehouse if they cannot find places to operate them.

“Bitcoin mining now requires a lot more strategies,” Vuong said. “There are multiple ways to play it, and it is going to become less about who has the money to spend and more about who has the best future planning and strategy.”

A quiet comeback

Another reason that Chinese miners have stopped selling mining machines is because some of them are able to plug their bitcoin mining rigs back online and mine bitcoins in certain jurisdictions in China, according to two major Chinese bitcoin mining companies that declined to disclose their identities because of China’s laws and regulations on crypto mining.

“Given how much hashrate has come back online and most miners outside China are still building their mining facilities, we think some miners in China with at least a few hundred megawatts of capacity combined have started mining again,” one source said.

In response to the increase in global hashrate as more miners come back online, bitcoin’s mining difficulty rose by 13% today in the latest biweekly adjustment. This latest adjustment, the largest since July, marks the third consecutive upward adjustment.

On the other hand, another source said some Chinese miners might have to shelve or sell their mining machines after the rainy season in South China comes to an end.

According to the data from Arcane Research, the bitcoin hashrate 14-day moving average has held above 100 EH/s. That is a 25% increase from the lows.

But large public Chinese mining companies migrating out of China such as BIT Mining are not recovering at nearly the same rate, and miners outside China are still building new facilities to add more hashrate.

BIT Mining has been deploying thousands of its mining machines to new facilities in central Asia and North America, but only a few hundred petahashes/per second (PH/s) of the company’s hashrate has been recovered, compared with its theoretical maximum hashrate of 1425.3 PH/s (1.42 EH/s).

Private and small-sized bitcoin miners, on the other hand, are beginning to see a more positive future with China’s regulations on crypto mining.

“Right now, some miners in China think that some hashrate will be plugged back in China, especially with the use of Ethereum GPU (graphics processing unit) mining machines not being banned in the country anymore,” Vera said. “They think that maybe a few hundred megawatts can come back online by the end of this year in China and that has increased the sentiment of Chinese brokers and miners.”

There may be more increases in rigs prices in the long term as new institutional players such as family offices are entering the bitcoin mining industry, according to Hu of MyRig.

From power producers to real estate to family offices, a variety of non-crypto companies are eyeing bitcoin mining to diversify their revenue streams. “Every company is becoming a mining company nowadays,” Hu said.

FCA Said Binance Had Complied With Its Requirements, But Was ‘Not Capable’ of Being Supervised

5 years 2 months ago

The U.K.’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which in June determined that crypto exchange Binance was “not capable of being effectively supervised,” today said the company had complied with the requirements it imposed.

  • In a supervisory notice dated June 25 and made public Wednesday, the regulator told Binance’s U.K. arm to not carry out any regulated activity and for the www.binance.com website to display in a prominent place that it is not permitted to do so. It also demanded an end to advertising and financial promotions.
  • In an update to a release published at the time, the FCA said: “On 25 June 2021, the FCA imposed requirements on Binance Markets Limited. The firm complied with all aspects of the requirements.”
  • In the supervisory notice, the FCA said it deemed the firm’s responses to questions as incomplete, and considered that it had refused to provide necessary information pertaining to formal requirements under money laundering and terrorist financing regulations.
  • The regulator’s notice to Binance in June was one of the first of a string of warnings from regulators and other bodies around the world, which has led to the world’s largest crypto exchange attempting to become more proactive in its dealing with regulators.

Recently Hacked Exchange Liquid Global Secures $120M Loan From FTX

5 years 2 months ago

FTX, the crypto exchange founded and led by billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried, will lend $120 million to Liquid Global, the Japanese crypto exchange that was hacked last week.

  • Last week, Liquid Global saw more than $90 million stolen in the hack. At the time, the exchange said the attack targeted its multiparty computation (MPC) system of custody.
  • The debt financing secured from FTX will be used for Liquid Global’s capital position and to  speed up capital generation projects, as well as provide liquidity, Liquid Global said in a press release.
  • “The financing will also improve Liquid’s balance sheet and, in turn, its key regulatory metrics, which further corroborates its ongoing licensing opportunities in the key jurisdictions of Japan and Singapore,” Liquid Global said.
  • “This opportunity with Liquid allows both organizations to strengthen and reinforce the belief that regulation in crypto and knowing your customer is an important part of the future of our industry,” Bankman-Fried said.
  • Liquid Global’s parent company, Quoine, was one of the first exchanges to receive a crypto asset operating license under Japan’s Payment Services Act.
  • Liquid’s Singapore subsidiary, Quoine Pte, has applied to the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) for a license under Singapore’s Payment Services Act.

WNBA ‘Moments’ Are Coming to Dapper Labs’ NBA Top Shot

5 years 2 months ago

Dapper Labs’ NBA Top Shot is set to sell “moments” commemorating the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) with an inaugural pack of licensed digital highlights scheduled for release on Friday.

Dapper Labs said the non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which are digital collectibles authenticated with blockchain technology, will initially feature highlight-reel snippets from top players across league history. Dapper Labs’ head of partnerships, Caty Tedman, recounted a collection of dunks, splashes and game-winning shots stretching back 25 years.

“We really have looked at the quality of play and tried to pull in the best of the best this season,” Tedman said.

The expansion comes as the WNBA looks to capitalize on a growing fan base. Buoyed by strong ratings – a recent game notched 755,000 viewers, the most for a regular season broadcast since 2012 – the league has been on a deal-making spree with streaming services and now licensing partnerships.

“They were the only major team sports property that grew its TV audience through the pandemic,” Tedman said.

The new NFTs will live alongside NBA Top Shot’s men’s “moments” to create “an ecosystem” of basketball that Tedman said she’s been pursuing since the first pack was introduced in 2020.

“What we’re really trying to do is create parity between the men’s and the women’s leagues,” Tedman said.

Thailand’s SEC Proposes New Rules for Crypto Custodians

5 years 2 months ago

Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has drafted new rules for custody of digital assets intended to strengthen investor protections, the SEC said in a statement.

  • The draft regulations look to prohibit crypto custodians from extracting benefits from their clients’ assets. Under the rules, digital asset custodians can’t use one client’s assets for the benefit of someone else, nor can they use it for their own benefit, such as lending the digital assets for interest.
  • Crypto custodians could only deposit a client’s assets at a commercial bank and would have to agree on the interest rate with their client, under the new proposals.
  • Under the rules, the crypto custodians will have to close clients’ accounts every business day to ensure that client assets are accounted for and not used for someone else’s benefit.
  • Fiat deposits with crypto custodians should be protected just as digital assets are, using “decentralized approval authority, multi-sign approval authority and check and balance,” the SEC said.
  • The draft rules are open for public comment until Sept. 22.
  • The Thai SEC has been very active in crypto in recent months: In June, it warned against decentralized finance (DeFi) and banned meme tokens and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and in July, it filed a complaint against Binance.
