Binance Reinstates Withdrawals for UK Clients: Report

5 years 3 months ago

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is once again operating in the U.K. after the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said the firm is not allowed to undertake any regulated activities without prior written approval.

  • Customers said Tuesday they couldn’t make deposits or withdrawals in pound sterling from Binance’s Faster Payments network, three days after the FCA cracked down on the exchange. At the time, Binance said the move would not have an impact on the services offered on its website.
  • Binance said on Wednesday that sterling withdrawals from its platform had been reactivated and users are able to buy digital coins with debit and credit cards, according to a Reuters report.

Decentralized Investing Platform Syndicate Raises $800K From 100 Investors

5 years 3 months ago

Decentralized investing platform Syndicate is decentralizing its investor base.

Some 100 investors have pitched in a total of $800,000 in a funding round that includes some of the biggest names in crypto – Balaji Srinivasan, Jeremy Allaire, Meltem Demirors and dozens more. Earlier this year, the platform raised $1 million in a seed round led by IDEO CoLab Ventures.

“Syndicate’s community raise is an important first step in democratizing our own platform and making Syndicate community-owned,” co-founders Will Papper and Ian Lee wrote.

Related: Curve DAO Contemplates Its Intellectual Property

The platform, which is still in private beta, aims to democratize investing by making it easier for people to spin up decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). DAOs are basically shared bank accounts on the blockchain with tools meant to facilitate group decision-making.

So far, Syndicate has launched six DAOs, including Audacity and the Komorebi Collective, which both provide venture capital to underrepresented founders in the crypto space.

Syndicate’s small but mighty approach to fundraising stands in stark contrast to the ongoing wave of institutional investment in decentralized finance (DeFi). It also speaks to the growing momentum of DAOs in the DeFi ecosystem.

DAO dogfooding

The community raise was done through a special-purpose DAO on Syndicate’s platform. Lee confirmed the investments were equity investments in Syndicate.

Lee told CoinDesk in an interview that the round was capped at 100 investors who were invited to invest after being a part of the Syndicate community for months. Contributors to the fund included notable crypto investors, entrepreneurs, professors and even a WallStreetBets moderator. (Note: It also included former CoinDesker Joon Ian Wong and Nathaniel Whittemore, host of CoinDesk’s The Breakdown podcast.)

“Syndicate is such a cool project because it gets us closer to a world of truly decentralized finance,” Wong told CoinDesk via Telegram. “It’s unlocking new ways for people to back the projects they truly care about.”

Lee said Syndicate’s investors also include members of the organization’s Discord group that previously purchased non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to commemorate the launch of various Syndicate DAOs. Some of these NFTs were purchased for as little as $100, which Lee said was important to the company to ensure equitable access to investing in Syndicate.

“We believe that investing is really, really powerful. It shapes what gets built in the world, by whom, and for whom, and where. At the same time, existing investment structures and models reinforce, in our opinion, inequality,” Lee told CoinDesk, adding:

“To solve that, we need to democratize that investment capability. We’re going to do that in a progressive and responsible way by working with aligned investors and communities.”

Lee said Syndicate expects to begin rolling out its private beta in stages beginning in the next several weeks.

Hut 8 Buys $44M Worth of Mining Machines to Double Its Hashrate

5 years 3 months ago

Canadian crypto-mining company Hut 8 Mining will almost double its hashrate by the end of the year with the purchase of 11,090 new mining machines for $44 million, the company said in a press release today.

The purchase comes on the heels of a $82 million round of fundraising that the company said would help expand its crypto mining capacity.

The machines are MicroBT M30S, M30S+ and M31S models from Hong Kong-based SuperAcme Technology. They are expected to be delivered in October and fully deployed by December.

The extra capacity is set to push Hut 8’s hashrate to 2.5 exahashes per second (EH/s), increasing Hut 8’s current average production of 6.5 to 7.5 bitcoins mined a day to 14 to 16 bitcoins a day. One exahash per second means a machine can compute one quintillion calculations per second. A quintillion is a number followed by 18 zeros.

FATF Report on Extreme Right Financing Highlights Cryptocurrency Use

5 years 3 months ago

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a global anti-money laundering watchdog, has released a report on the ways extreme right-wing groups are financed, which includes a section on cryptocurrency.

The FATF’s report, titled “Ethnically or Racially Motivated Terrorism Financing,” points out that virtual assets like bitcoin have been used by extremists who have been gradually shut out of traditional payment platforms, in the same way extreme right wing (ERW) groups have been blocked from social media.

The report highlights that some ERW groups have switched to “so-called ‘privacy coins,’ i.e. VAs [virtual assets] that allow a user to maintain total anonymity when making blockchain transactions.”

Related: Mexico’s Finance Minister Confirms Cryptos Are Banned From Financial System

It’s worth noting that the blockchains underpinning virtual assets, even end-to-end encrypted varieties, leave some record of transactions – as opposed to cash, the preferred medium of exchange for criminals and terrorists.

It’s also worth noting that other unconventional funding vehicles merit scrutiny:

“There has been plenty of interest in VAs from different ERW groups and individuals looking for anonymity, especially after being removed from mainstream payment platforms,” the report states, adding:

“ERW actors that feel more security-conscious and desire a greater level of secrecy, often choose VAs. However, notably there is limited information on the volume of funds being transferred in this way.

The FATF report goes on to list examples, such as one far-right organization in South Africa that created its own stablecoin that operates on a 1:1 ratio with the South African rand (ZAR).

“The stablecoin, managed by an application styled PayApp, enables the group to use digital money as cash,” said the FATF report. “The transactional data lasts 24 hours and thereafter is untraceable.”

FATF said bank statement analysis on the South African extremist group showed that the organization raised ZAR 268,000 ($17,469) in funds.

Other examples included Scandinavian ERW group Nordisk Styrke, which only gives cryptocurrency addresses on the organization’s donations page.

A financial investigation into the terror attack perpetrated by the Christchurch mosque shooter in New Zealand in March 2019 found that he had made use of virtual assets to transfer funds, the FATF report said.

Algorand Gets Cozy With Crypto Custodian Copper

5 years 3 months ago

U.K.-based cryptocurrency custodian Copper has been appointed to provide the safekeeping of assets on the Algrorand blockchain.

Copper, which harnesses a cryptographic key sharding technology called multi-party computation (MPC), will be supporting Algorand’s native token, ALGO, as well as Algorand Standard Assets (ASAs), the tokenized representation of other asset types on the proof-of-stake blockchain.

Crypto custodians are adept at adding support for new tokens and coins, and Copper is no exception. Meanwhile, Algorand is supported by a range of specialist custodians such as Coinbase Custody and BitGo.

Related: Coinbase Receives Crypto Custody License From German Regulator BaFin

But the current pairing is a deeper partnership: Algorand is looking beyond Copper’s safe-keeping provisions to explore the custodian’s ClearLoop system of instant asset exchange and settlement, for example.

“Copper adds a layer of speed that you wouldn’t be able to find outside of their network, and of course this is right up Algorand’s alley of being extremely fast, secure and efficient,” David Markley, Algorand’s director of business solutions, said in an interview.

Founded in 2017 by Turing Award–winning MIT professor Silvio Micali, Algorand now has some 700 organizations building on the blockchain and some serious money behind it, including a $100 million Algorand ecosystem fund launched earlier this month by Arrington Capital.

As well as looking after ALGO tokens, which may include those used for staking on Algorand, Copper will be charged with looking after the 4.5 million ASA assets represented on the chain.

Exotic assets

Related: Security Audit Firm Raises $5.3M From Funds Investing in Polkadot, Cardano Blockchains

What can be thought of as the base layer of digital dollar equivalents, Algorand ASAs include a clutch of well-known stablecoins such as USDC and USDT, as well as Canadian dollar, Swiss franc stablecoins and Mexican peso to be added shortly, said Markley. One layer up from stablecoins, things get more exotic, he added.

“We have tokenized real estate via a handful of firms that have tokenized either home equity or individual homes and represented those on Algorand’s blockchain,” he said. “We’ve also got a long list of partnerships with firms like Securitize and Tokensoft and the other security token issuers. And since the beginning of this year, we’ve seen a proliferation of NFTs.”

It’s a plum assignment for London-based Copper, which last month closed a $50 million Series B funding round.  Tyler Kenyon, Copper’s chief marketing officer, said that over the past year the two firms kept bumping into each other at events and sharing their like-minded views.

“A partnership with Algorand felt like a natural choice,” said Kenyon. “Enabling the ASA standard in our custody application means that when those projects are ready we can make an ultra smooth onboarding process for them.”

Crypto Trading Firm Valkyrie Raises $10M to Drive Bitcoin ETF Hopes

5 years 3 months ago

Crypto asset manager Valkyrie Investments has raised $10 million in a Series A funding found from an interesting roster of backers.

Precept Capital Management, XBTO, 10X Capital and UTXO Management headlined the fundraise but it also included Tron founder Justin Sun, Litecoin founder Charlie Lee and former Major League Baseball pitcher C.J. Wilson.

Valkyrie is well known in crypto as one of a handful of U.S. companies waiting patiently in line for a bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) to be approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Related: Blockware Raises $25M to Expand Bitcoin Mining Operations in Kentucky

The funding will help drive Valkyrie’s three business lines, said the firm’s chief investment officer, Steven McClurg:

  1. a trust or separately managed account (SMA) offering designed for institutional investors;
  2. the ETF division;
  3. and a hedge fund business.

This translates into expanding the Valkyrie presence in Nashville, including hiring additional research, compliance and marketing staff, according to a press release. There are also plans to expand the firm’s presence in Asia.

‘Absolutely insane’

A few days ago, the SEC said it would delay a decision on Valkyrie’s ETF application, having pushed back on a similar application from VanEck Bitcoin Trust the week before.

“Never in my career in financial services have I seen anything like this, where there’s 13 applications for the same ETF product,” McClurg said in an interview. “It’s absolutely insane.”

Blockware Raises $25M to Expand Bitcoin Mining Operations in Kentucky

5 years 3 months ago

Blockware has raised $25 million as North American bitcoin mining looks to seize the moment.

Blockware founder and CEO Michael Stoltzner declined to name entities involved in the funding round, but told CoinDesk the list of investors included several “prominent” individuals and crypto funds. This round brings Blockware’s total capital raised to date to $32 million since its launch in 2019.

The money will be used to purchase 14,000 mining rigs over the next two years, which Blockware has sourced from both Bitmain and the open market. The company will use 8,000 of the rigs to build out its new mining facility in Paducah, Ky., and will sell 6,000 rigs to other U.S.-based bitcoin mining operations.

Related: Crypto Trading Firm Valkyrie Raises $10M to Drive Bitcoin ETF Hopes

Stoltzner said he chose Paducah for Blockware’s first large-scale mining facility because the city had everything he was looking for: friendly government officials, plenty of skilled and unskilled labor, and most importantly, cheap energy.

The Paducah facility will be built on land that is 100 yards from the Big Rivers Electric-operated energy source that will power Blockware’s rigs.

The Chinese government’s crackdown on mining operations has caused many to shut down, and bitcoin’s hashrate has plummeted in response. The situation has caused many in the crypto community to call for a more global, decentralized mining structure to reduce the network’s reliance on Chinese miners. Miners have also been under increased scrutiny in recent months as bitcoin’s sustainability debate, led by unofficial crypto figureheads like Elon Musk, rages on.

Power mix

Stoltzner said the company chose to source power from Big Rivers Electric because the company used a mix of renewable and non-renewable sources, including hydroelectric, wind and coal.

Related: China’s Bitcoin Mining Crackdown Is a Boon for Miners Elsewhere

“Kentucky is the largest coal-producing state in the country,” Stoltzner said. “That’s the resource they have. It’s a tough argument, and people in Kentucky feel different about that argument than people in California.”

Stoltzner said Blockware is working on a program to purchase carbon offsets and is in the early stages of joining the Michael Saylor-led Bitcoin Mining Council.

According to Stoltzner, Blockware’s smaller-scale mining operations in upstate New York, Washington and Newfoundland, Canada, are almost completely run on hydroelectric power.

Ensuring the sustainability of North American bitcoin mining is part of Stoltzner’s larger stated goal of increasing the bitcoin hashrate in North America, which currently only accounts for an estimated 10% of the hashrate worldwide.

Bitcoin must be mined domestically in order to fully go mainstream in North America, Stoltzner said.

“What we’ve seen coming out of China and Eastern Europe – that’s not helping to legitimize bitcoin in the industry,” Stoltzner said. “I believe that companies operating out of the United States are very much legitimizing crypto and bitcoin. It’s got to happen out of the United States.”

Valid Points: How Ethereum Miners Are Preparing for EIP 1559 and the Merge

5 years 3 months ago

The Pacific Northwest is sweltering under a once-in-a-millennium heat dome. I feel as though the effects of it are being felt all the way in the Northeast, where I am currently sweating through my eyeballs as I finish writing this newsletter.

This week, I pull back the curtains on how miners are preparing for Ethereum’s forthcoming fee market change, EIP 1559. Also, I explain the hidden lesson behind the rare cases of Ethereum 2.0 validators with a balance of more than 64 ETH. For most of these validators, the high balance is not by choice.

This article originally appeared in Valid Points, CoinDesk’s weekly newsletter breaking down Ethereum 2.0 and its sweeping impact on crypto markets. Subscribe to Valid Points here.

Pulse check: double deposit incidents

Related: Cream Finance Announces Integration With Polygon

The balances of Ethereum 2.0 validators range wildly from 30 ETH to 65 ETH. The main reason for the extreme disparity is not because some validators are more profitable than others or because some validators started earning rewards on the network earlier than others. Roughly 168 validators out of 178,000 simply deposited their minimum stake of 32 ETH twice, by accident.

A prime example of double deposits occurred on Wednesday, June 9, when a user submitted a batch of 100 transactions to the Eth 2.0 deposit contract through crypto asset staking pool Stakefish. Each transaction deposited the required amount of 32 ETH, which would enable the creation of 100 unique validators on the Eth 2.0 Beacon Chain.

According to Stakefish’s head of strategy and operations, Jun Soo Kim, the user then “manually invoked” a second deposit of the same batch of transactions, causing each 32 ETH deposit to become a deposit of 64 ETH.

“Our user interface does not permit these types of action, as there are proper locking and internal checks in place. However, we literally can’t stop a user from invoking the deposit contract directly on Ethereum,” said Kim.

Related: Stablecoins and CBDCs: Private Vs. Public Monetary Innovation

Speaking to the negative consequences of accidentally staking more than the required 32 ETH balance for a single validator, Consensys’ Ben Edgington noted in his biweekly newsletter What’s New in Eth2 that the additional stake would not earn any rewards on the network and would be “locked up until withdrawals are enabled in, perhaps, a year’s time.”

Other commentators, responding in a Reddit thread about the incident, called the double deposits a “huge mistake” and a “bummer” for the unlucky user who would be earning closer to 3% instead of the average 6% annual percentage return on his or her stake.

Confirming this sentiment, Kim said Stakefish has been “in close contact with the user and … notified them that there can’t be anything done until withdrawals are enabled.” Kim added, “We will be closely monitoring the upgrade proposals [for Eth 2.0] that will help the user withdraw excess ETH from validators.”

These double deposit incidents highlight the importance of taking extra precautions when setting up an Eth 2.0 validator and, in cases where a user is setting up multiple validators at once, they also highlight the benefits of running through the setup process on a test network before executing the steps on Ethereum mainnet.

On the bright side, locking up any amount of ETH on the Eth 2.0 Beacon Chain is one safe, secure and fail-proof way to hold onto, or “HODL,” your coins for a year’s time, if not longer.

New frontiers: upcoming network upgrades

The following is the first of a two-part series explaining how Ethereum miners are preparing for two upcoming network upgrades, the London hard fork and the Merge.

The London hard fork

The most imminent of the two is the London hard fork, which is expected to get activated on Ethereum this July. As I discussed in last week’s Valid Points issue, one of the most controversial code changes bundled into London is Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 1559. EIP 1559 will radically change the fee dynamics of Ethereum by introducing a minimum fee to all on-chain transactions called the “base fee.”

Normally, transaction fees are set by users and accepted in full by miners. Under EIP 1559, the base fee is set by the Ethereum protocol automatically and is removed or “burnt” by the network instead of being awarded to miners. The burning mechanism of EIP 1559 is one of the most controversial aspects of the London upgrade because of its potential to reduce miner revenue.

“While we think [EIP 1559] will bring better predictability for transaction inclusion, we think that fee burning is a bad idea, considering many transactions requiring extended computing resources for smart contract execution … will no longer be compensated,” Slava Karpenko, the CTO of Ethereum mining pool 2Miners, told CoinDesk in an email.

Despite the concern over reduced miner revenue, Karpenko and other Ethereum miners have made their peace about the activation of EIP 1559 this summer.

Residential Ethereum miner Brian Lee, who runs 11 GPUs in his garage in California, said that despite the initial “backlash from the mining community,” EIP 1559 and the London upgrade was now a “non-issue” for most miners.

“All of us accepted it,” said Lee during a phone interview with CoinDesk. “I’m pretty confident that they’re going to get it done. It’s just a matter of time, July or August.”

‘What options do we have?’

After a successful activation on Ethereum test network Ropsten this past week, EIP 1559 is scheduled for release on the Ethereum test network Goerli on Wednesday, June 30. Assuming all goes well on Goerli, Ethereum Foundation’s Tim Beiko estimated that protocol developers could pick a block number – and subsequently a date – for main network activation shortly thereafter.

Any disgruntled miners who do not choose to upgrade their software to the latest version would effectively be mining a different Ethereum blockchain. For most miners, this would be the least-profitable option for them to take, according to Igor Stadnyk, the CEO of Ethereum mining pool Minerall.

“What options do we have?” said Stadnyk in a phone interview with CoinDesk. “[If] we tell the world we are not happy with this proposal and we will run on non-updated software, we will run old Ethereum. This means one more Ethereum Classic will be created … It will be like a network split and then the question is, will other big market players support this network split? I don’t think so.”

Stadnyk and his team, like Lee and Karpenko, will be supporting the London upgrade come July. Stadnyk said he remains confident in the long-term success of Ethereum as a result of the network’s constant evolution and iterative development, which is why he is also now exploring options to continue participating in the network even when mining is no longer an option.

Some time early next year, Ethereum is expected to transition fully to a proof-of-stake (PoS) protocol, meaning that validators instead of miners will take over the responsibilities of transaction validation and block production. This upgrade to PoS is nicknamed “the Merge.”

While Stadnyk has started to run “a few [Eth 2.0] validators already” in preparation for the Merge, other miners such as Lee and Karpenko are not as eager to support Ethereum’s PoS transition.

“At the cost right now … I would probably have to sell some of my bitcoin into ether to become a validator and I feel like putting my wealth into bitcoin for me is a better long-term play,” said Lee.

In next week’s Valid Points, I’ll uncover the reasons why Ethereum miners like Lee are not as supportive of Ethereum’s Merge upgrade as they are the London hard fork, and discuss the differing plans miners have to remain profitable in their operations post-Merge.

Validated takes
  • The first London hard fork block has been produced on the Ropsten test network. TAKEAWAY: Ethereum developers are moving forward with the development of EIP 1559 and other code changes bundled into London by testing the upgrade in more realistic network environments. London is scheduled for activation on the Goerli and Rinkeby test networks over the next two weeks, before going live on mainnet. (Article, Yahoo Finance)
  • In order to remain compliant to the Ethereum network after EIP 1559 is activated, developers behind layer 2 scaling solution Polygon have proposed their own implementation of EIP 1559 to the Polygon network. TAKEAWAY: The proposed implementation of EIP 1559 on Polygon differs from how the code change is expected to work on Ethereum. Instead of burning the minimum fee payment, also called the “base fee,” Polygon developers are considering transferring these payments to the network’s decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) to help fund protocol development over the long term. (Post, Polygon Governance Forum)
  • A rogue developer withdrew $500K worth of governance token SGT from decentralized Eth 2.0 staking service SharedStake. TAKEAWAY: A vulnerability in the timelock code that was meant to release SGT tokens gradually over time was exploited by one of the developers of SharedStake. The SGT tokens were subsequently dumped on the market, and the price of the tokens fell 96% from $1.60 to under $0.03. Furthermore, users have been advised to stop using and to exit the platform’s staking services because it remains unclear if the withdrawal keys for some 16,000 ETH, worth roughly $32 million, have also been compromised in the process. This is a developing story. (Article, The Defiant)
  • Anthony Sassano suggests DeFi on Ethereum is “greatly” flattening the cost of offering financial products and services to individuals and businesses. TAKEAWAY: Traditional asset managers such as BlackRock generate significantly more revenue than DeFi protocols such as crypto asset robo-advisor Yearn. However, these DeFi protocols are magnitudes more efficient than traditional companies in terms of dollars generated per employee, which suggests smart contract technology is a powerful tool in cutting down the operational costs of financial services. (Newsletter post, The Daily Gwei)
  • Gas fees on Ethereum reached their lowest point in 2021, with average transactions costing around 5 gwei, or $0.15, this past weekend. TAKEAWAY: Decentralized application activity has slowed on Ethereum, with the recent price drop of ether. Less on-chain activity and lower ETH prices have pushed gas fees down to levels not seen in several months. (Article, Yahoo Finance)
  • The number of accounts, excluding smart contract accounts, holding at least 32 ETH is at its lowest point since August 2019. TAKEAWAY: Data from Glassnode shows the number of user-owned accounts holding a minimum of 32 ETH has been on the decline since November 2020 when staking on Ethereum with a balance of 32 ETH first launched. NYDIG, NCR to Bring Crypto Purchases to 650 Banks: Report

5 years 3 months ago

A partnership between NYDIG and enterprise payments provider NCR will make crypto purchases available to 650 banks and credit unions.

  • The initiative is in response to demand from NCR banking clients whose customers have been buying crypto through outside exchanges, according to a Forbes report Wednesday.
  • These clients will now be able to access crypto trading through their banking apps, with NYDIG providing custody.
  • The partnership could bring crypto to 24 million customers across the 650 banks that NCR services.
  • “A lot of these banks have seen that one of the biggest outflows from their depositors is moving money from the bank to exchanges like Coinbase,” said Yan Zhao, co-founder of Stone Ridge, sister company of NYDIG.
  • “And so that’s part of why banks are so excited to have this capability for themselves and for their consumers.”

Bitcoin Set for Record Second-Quarter Price Drop

5 years 3 months ago

Bitcoin prices were on track for a record second-quarter percentage decline, weighed down by China’s crackdown, concern the Federal Reserve would start tapering its stimulus program and persistent demand for downside hedges.

The leading cryptocurrency was trading near $34,824 at 10:39 UTC on Wednesday, down almost 41% for the April to June period. The drop snaps a four-quarter winning streak that saw prices chart a sixfold rise to almost $60,000, according to Bitstamp data.

The historically strong quarter began on a positive note, with bitcoin rallying to a record $64,801 in the runup to the Nasdaq debut of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase on April 14. However, momentum stalled in subsequent weeks as retail investors struggled to do the heavy lifting in the wake of whale selling.

The market, therefore, looked weak and took a beating in mid-May after the U.S. electric-car maker Tesla delisted bitcoin as a payments alternative, citing environmental concerns and dashing hopes for widespread corporate adoption. China’s reiteration of the crypto-mining ban and concerns of an early unwinding of stimulus by the Fed amplified the bearish move, pushing prices down to a then four-month low of $30,000.

Since then, bitcoin has traded mainly in the range of $30,000 to $40,000, barring a brief drop to $28,600 on June 22. Sentiment has turned quite bearish, as evidenced by directionless trading in the wake of El Salvador’s decision to adopt the cryptocurrency as a legal tender.

Moreover, fears of a deeper sell-off persist, according to the so-called options smile – a chart created by plotting implied volatilities against options at various strike prices expiring on the same date. Implied volatility refers to investors’ expectations of price turbulence over a specific period. It is influenced by demand for call and put options.

The option smile for short-date and near-dated expiries carries a steep slope at strikes lower than bitcoin’s current price. That’s a sign of relatively higher implied volatility or demand for options at lower strikes than those at higher strikes. In other words, investors are continuing to buy protective puts – contracts that give purchaser the right but not the obligation to sell the underlying asset, in this case bitcoin, at a predetermined price on or before a specific date.

Pankaj Balani, CEO of Delta Exchange, doesn’t foresee bulls making a strong comeback anytime soon.

“Bitcoin is in a consolidation phase, and we think this can stretch through September,” he said. “Since its peak in April, the institutional interest has waned, and there is lack of liquidity from both corporations and retail buyers.”

According to Balani, the cryptocurrency remains vulnerable to any weakness on the macro front and could drop to the former hurdle-turned-support of $19,666 (December 2017) in case of a broad-based risk aversion.

Currently, traditional markets are showing no signs of weakness. Despite the Fed’s recent hawkish talk, the S&P 500, Wall Street’s benchmark equity index, is on track to end the second quarter 8% higher, a fifth consecutive quarterly gain. Meanwhile, gold, a safe haven, has erased most of its gains to trade just 2% higher for the quarter, according to TradingView data.

The situation, however, could change if the U.S. economy continues to accelerate, reviving fears of an early Fed tightening.

That said, some observers remain optimistic and are drawing parallels with the price action seen in 2013 when bitcoin crashed from $250 to $45 in April, bringing the bull run to a screeching halt, only to surge to four figures by November.

“While I don’t think the bottom is in, the market looks like 2013, and bitcoin could see a mega pump,” John Lillic, ConsenSys alum, Polygon advisor, and Dfinity whale, told CoinDesk in a Telegram chat.

Stack Funds’ COO and co-founder Matthew Dibb doesn’t subscribe to the 2013 scenario, saying the current market structure is entirely different. He remains, however, a cautious long-term bull.

“From a technical analysis perspective, the second-quarter drop is a pullback,” Dibb said. “Bitcoin is still in the stage of a parabolic advance.”

A breakout of the current range could bring a rally toward $85,000 by March 2022, Dibb said.
