New Ethereum-Based Derivatives Trading Platform Wins EU’s MIFID License

5 years 7 months ago

CloseCross, a derivatives trading platform built on the Ethereum blockchain, has been granted a European Union MIFID license ahead of its market launch later this month.

According to an announcement emailed to CoinDesk on Tuesday, this is the first time the license has been granted to a blockchain-based derivatives trading platform.

When live, CloseCross will offer multiparty derivative contracts for global stock market indices, cryptocurrency, forex rates, commodities, stock prices, interest rates and others.

The company said it developed and patented its platform, on which traders can enter derivative contracts “without the need of major banks issuing derivatives or having to take on leverage.”

The Ethereum blockchain provided CloseCross with the tech base to “entirely automate the derivatives sector and replace the centralized derivative issuers entirely”, Vabihav Kadikar, CEO of the London and Malta-based company, told CoinDesk.

Kadikar also cited the importance of “creating an immutable trust layer” through smart contracts in the automated calculations and fund flows when multiple traders are entering into a single multiparty derivative contract.

TON Investor Threatens to Sue Telegram if Not Compensated for £100M: Report

5 years 7 months ago

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has reportedly received a demand for around $100 million in compensation from Da Vinci Capital, an investor in the messaging firm’s failed TON blockchain project.

  • Da Vinci Capital’s lawyers have sent Durov notice of intent to file a lawsuit against TON Inc. and Telegram Inc., sources close to the matter told Forbes Russia Monday.
  • Sources close to Telegram’s senior management, however, told the news source the amount demanded is $20 million, though the article suggest this could be a separate letter.
  • Telegram likely has two weeks to respond to the letter before the investor will move the matter to a U.K. court, Forbes said.
  • The TON blockchain project was shelved in May 2020 following a lawsuit from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
  • The SEC said Telegram’s massive $1.7 billion initial coin offering for the project in 2017 had been an unregistered securities sale.
  • Investors were offered a choice of getting 72% of their stake back at the time or lending the funds to Telegram for another year and receiving 110% back.

Bitcoin Options Traders Are Taking Bullish Bets on $75K and Higher By Summer

5 years 7 months ago

Institutional traders look to be positioning for a bitcoin price rally to $75,000 and beyond in coming months, according to options market data.

“On Monday, some block traders took bull call spreads at $75,000 and $100,000 strike call options expiring on May 28 via over-the-counter (OTC) trading and settlement desk Paradigm,” Swiss-based options analytics platform Laevitas told CoinDesk. “These could be institutions betting that bitcoin will hit at least $75,000 by summer.”

A call option gives the holder the right but not the obligation to buy the underlying asset at a predetermined price on or before a specific date. A bull call spread involves buying call options at/below or above the spot market price and selling an equal number of calls with the same expiry at a higher strike price.

For instance, at 20:23 UTC (5:23 p.m. ET) on Monday, a trading entity bought 100 contracts of the May 28 expiry call option at $75,000 strike and sold 100 contracts of the May 28 expiry call option at $100,000 strike. Bitcoin was trading at $48,721 when the call spread was bought.

Institutions tend to trade through OTC desks to avoid influencing spot market prices. Trades facilitated by Paradigm are automatically executed, margined and cleared at Deribit, the world’s largest crypto options exchange by trading volume.

The trade cost 4.75 BTC, which is the maximum loss the institution would suffer if bitcoin ends at or below $75,000 on May 28.

The initial cost would have been much higher if the trader had only bought $75,000 calls. “The purpose of the call spread is to have a bullish direction but offset the costs of merely buying calls,” Laevitas said.

While selling $100,000 calls has bought down the cost, it also limits maximum return possible to 20.25 BTC. The strategy will earn a maximum profit if bitcoin settles at or above $100,000 on May 28. Several other call spreads were bought on Monday at strikes ranging from $52,000 to $100,000.

The data shows institutions remain undeterred by the recent price pullback and foresee a continued rally over the next three months.

At press time, bitcoin is changing hands near $48,730, representing a 1.8% gain over 24 hours. The cryptocurrency was rejected above $50,000 during Asian hours, according to CoinDesk 20 data.

While the cryptocurrency has bounced up from lows near $43,000 observed over the weekend, some analysts believe the pullback may not be over yet.

“At the moment, we think the biggest risk to bitcoin is the short-term risk associated with a downturn in the U.S. and global equities,” said Joel Kruger, currency strategist at LMAX Digital. “We think there’s still room for more weakness ahead and would caution against expectations that the bottom is in.”

Futures tied to the S&P 500 are currently down 0.23% on the day. Losses may deepen, adding to bearish pressures around bitcoin if U.S. Treasury yields resume their rally.

Thai SEC Backtracks on Unpopular Proposal for New Crypto Investor Qualifications

5 years 7 months ago

Following much public criticism, Thailand’s securities regulator has said it wasn’t serious when it proposed a high bar for new cryptocurrency traders seeking to open exchange accounts.

According to a report from the Bangkok Post on Monday, the secretary-general of the Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, now says the criteria proposed in the draft, announced last month, were an attempt to gauge public opinion and can still be changed based on the opinions of stakeholders.

The draft plan had suggested new crypto investors should have a 1 million baht ($33,000) minimum annual income, a minimum age limit and proven trading experience. However, the proposal was heavily criticized for effectively barring investors with low or middle incomes and those wanting to get involved in trading, per the report.

Related: Bitcoin Options Traders Are Taking Bullish Bets on $75K and Higher By Summer

The average salary in Thailand is around 175,450 baht, or $5,800, according to Trading Economics.

“I proposed the criteria that many considered too tough to prompt people to express their opinions on the matter and did not intend to say these are the exact qualifications that will be implemented,” said Suwanmongkol. People had misunderstood that the annual income limit is not the minimum fund required, she said.

The SEC is also bringing forward a public hearing to Tuesday – three weeks ahead of schedule – to discuss the proposal.

The plan came as an attempt to safeguard possibly ill-informed new investors against the risks of trading in notoriously volatile cryptocurrencies.

“If the SEC just stands by and does nothing, it would be totally our responsibility if investors lose on cryptocurrency,” said Suwanmongkol.

Fans of the popular canine-themed cryptocurrency dogecoin can now make purchases at 1,800 ATM locations in the U.S.

According to a Tuesday tweet by ATM provider CoinFlip, DOGE can now be purchased with cash across its network, as the company makes the most of DOGE’s surging popularity.

DOGE was launched in 2013 and quickly grew in popularity thanks to its cute Shiba Inu logo and meme-loving community.

More recently, it’s been endorsed by big names such as Elon Musk, Snoop Dogg and rocker Gene Simmons – with prices soaring as a result. DOGE has also been wrapped up in the recent “meme trading” craze that saw social media groups pump stocks such as GameStop (GME).

“CoinFlip has always been about the small business and retail customers, and with recent events, Dogecoin has paradigm’ shifted itself into more than just a meme coin, it has become a symbol of the small league investors,” a spokesperson for CoinFlip told CoinDesk via email.

CoinFlip ATMs already offer customers access to bitcoin, litecoin, ether, dash, komodo, chainlink, stellar and tron.

The firm’s network has rapidly expanded from around 451 machines in February 2020 to around 1,800 today. The company told CoinDesk it intends to grow that number to over 4,000 by year’s end.

Crypto Trading Firm BCB Group Raises $4.5M to Snag More Regulatory Licenses

5 years 7 months ago

BCB Group, a U.K.-based business banking challenger for the crypto industry, has raised $4.5 million in a funding round co-led by North Island Ventures and Blockchain.com Ventures, with participation from Pantera, L1 Digital and Pack Capital.

BCB Group CEO Oliver von Landsberg-Sadie said the firm has not urgently needed to raise capital because it is profitable. Still, he said the time had come to attain more licenses – and also make a push into Switzerland and Singapore.

“We want more regulatory licenses in the U.K., EU and Switzerland,” Landsberg-Sadie told CoinDesk in an interview. “These are expensive, not just from a working capital point of view in terms of funding staff. But there’s also a regulatory capital aspect. Where our licenses become more bank-like, we have to hold more capital on the balance sheet in reserve.”

Related: Bitcoin Options Traders Are Taking Bullish Bets on $75K and Higher By Summer

Landsberg-Sadie said one of the interesting (and expensive) licenses BCB is pursuing is the Swiss Fintech license, which comes with a connection to the Swiss National Bank.

Last month, BCB Group launched a treasury services offering aimed at crypto curious chief financial officers.

BCB has seen about 19x volume growth over the past 12 months, Landsberg-Sadie said, and in February 2021 the firm processed over $4 billion in payments and trades, according to a press release. Previously, BCB raised $1 million back in May 2019 from crypto investment bank NKB and an angel investor.

The firm plans to raise again later this year, Landsberg-Sadie said.

“We are going to raise again later this year, probably on a larger scale in the $10 million to $15 million range,” he said.

Bitcoin Briefly Climbs Back Above $50K for First Time in Six Days

5 years 7 months ago

Bitcoin early Tuesday pushed above $50,000 for the first time in six days, as the largest cryptocurrency continued to recover from last week’s 21% sell-off.

  • Bitcoin (BTC) is trading around $49,444 as of 12:37 UTC (7:37 p.m. ET) and cooling slightly, having risen to a 24 hour high above $50,200.
  • The price has gained 6.8% over the previous 24 hours. Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $45,741.74-$50,213.03 (CoinDesk 20).
  • BTC is trading above its 100-hour and 200-hour averages on the hourly chart, a bullish signal for market technicians.

The push past $50,000 came as the Chicago Board Options Exchange’s announced an official filing to list shares of VanEck’s BTC exchange-traded fund.

Trading volume was strong on Monday, as bitcoin’s price rose 9.7%, the most in three weeks, according to data from the Bitstamp exchange.

“We have seen an increase in cryptocurrency offerings from the largest investment banks including bitcoin research, custody, trading, and prime brokerage,” said Kyle Davies, co-founder of Three Arrows Capital. “I expect these offerings to grow as global investment banks embrace cryptocurrencies.”

Cryptocurrencies were up across the board alongside bitcoin, with stellar, XRP and ether also gaining.

The mood was mixed, with some traders expressing caution:

“We’ve seen lots of signs of cooling off in BTC — price decreasing, lower premiums, less volatility,” Sam Bankman-Fried told CoinDesk via Telegram on Monday. “That obviously doesn’t say for sure what will happen in the future though.”

CBOE Kicks Off Bitcoin ETF Clock With VanEck Filing

5 years 7 months ago

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) has officially filed to list shares of VanEck’s bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF).

CBOE filed a Form 19b-4 Monday, formally announcing its intention to list and trade shares of the VanEck Bitcoin Trust. The form kicks off the legal review period that could lead to the first bitcoin ETF in the U.S.

While Cboe filing a 19b-4 starts the formal regulatory review process, the SEC still has to acknowledge it is reviewing the application before the first 45-day clock begins. Within those 45 days, the SEC has to either approve or disapprove the application, or extend the review period.

Related: Bitcoin Briefly Climbs Back Above $50K for First Time in Six Days

The SEC can extend the review period up to 240 days before it has to make a final decision. Historically, the SEC has rejected every bitcoin ETF application, including previous efforts by VanEck.

Industry participants say a bitcoin ETF will allow retail traders to invest in a regulated bitcoin product without needing to invest in the cryptocurrency directly. Institutions may also be more willing to invest in a bitcoin ETF than in the cryptocurrency for compliance or reporting reasons.

VanEck announced its intention to launch an ETF earlier this year, as did Valkyrie, another investment firm.

While a bitcoin ETF does not currently trade within the U.S., Canadian regulators have approved multiple bitcoin ETFs over the past month, with one seeing close to $1 billion invested by retail traders within its first few days.

Related: A Leading Compliance Services Firm Is Optimistic New SEC Chief Will Make Crypto Industry Safer for Retail Investors

The approval of a Canadian ETF is likely a signal that the SEC will approve one in the U.S. this year as well, said Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas.

Bitcoin’s market “is approximately 100 times larger” in 2021 than it was in 2016, the CBOE/VanEck application said, with regulated bitcoin futures representing approximately $28 billion in notional trading volume on CME.

Bitcoin Miners Saw Record $1.36B Revenue in February

5 years 7 months ago

Bitcoin miners broke a more-than-three-year-old record in February, generating $1.36 billion in revenue, up 21% from January, according to on-chain data from Coin Metrics analyzed by CoinDesk.

The previous revenue record of $1.25 billion was set in December 2017 during the peak of the cryptocurrency’s previous bull market. Last month’s surge in revenue came as bitcoin‘s price climbed during the month from $33,000 to a new all-time high of just above $58,000 before dropping sharply to $43,000 in the last week.

Revenue estimates assume miners sell their BTC immediately.

Related: Bitcoin Briefly Climbs Back Above $50K for First Time in Six Days

Measured by per terahash per second (TH/s), miner revenues bounced between $0.23 and $0.38 through February, ending the month near $0.30, per data from Luxor Technologies.

Network fees brought in $186 million in February, or 13.7% of total revenue, a significant percentage increase from the 10.3% of revenue represented by fees last month. Fee revenue hit its highest mark since January 2018, per Coin Metrics data.

Notably, fees as a percentage of total revenue continues a strong upward trend since April, prior to the network’s third-ever block subsidy halving in May. Increases in fee revenue are important to sustain the network’s security as the subsidy decreases every four years.

Market Wrap: Bitcoin Faces Long Odds in Bid for Sixth Straight Monthly Gain

5 years 7 months ago

Bitcoin rose 7%, reversing the past few days’ losses, as some blockchain data turned bullish and new signs emerged of increasing cryptocurrency acceptancer by Wall Street firms including Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Fidelity Investments.

  • Bitcoin (BTC) trading around $48,593.99 as of 21:00 UTC (4 p.m. ET). Climbing 8.10% over the previous 24 hours.
  • Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $44,874.92-$49,520.72 (CoinDesk 20)
  • BTC trades above its 10-hour and 50-hour averages on the hourly chart, a bullish signal for market technicians.

Bitcoin prices surged 36% in February, marking the cryptocurrency’s fifth consecutive monthly price increase, the first time that’s happened since mid-2019. A six-month stretch of gains hasn’t been seen since the period of November 2012 through April 2013.

So the odds might seem stacked against a monthly gain in March, which would match the seven-year-old streak. But the first day of March pushed bitcoin in that direction amid signs that more big institutions are moving into cryptocurrencies.

A top executive for the giant U.S. money manager Fidelity Investments compared bitcoin with gold, and the investment bank Goldman Sachs said it will relaunch its crypto trading desk after a three-year hiatus. Citigroup, one of the biggest U.S. banks, wrote that bitcoin was at a “tipping point” as more institutions adopt the cryptocurrency.

Google Finance added a data tab on cryptocurrencies. And Michael Saylor’s MicroStrategy, which has been a big bitcoin buyer for its corporate treasury, added another $15 million worth.

Bullish blockchain data

The sudden move higher following last week’s 21% plunge – the biggest market correction since March 2020 – was foretold by some traders and analysts who were seeing increasingly bullish signs in blockchain data.

One such indicator, the spent output profit ratio (SOPR), represents the profit ratio of coins moved on the blockchain. If the metric is above 1, that means most holders could sell their bitcoin at a profit. But when it slips below 1, more traders would be selling at a loss, seen as unsustainable since many holders are reluctant to accept anything but profits.

And the metric dropped below 1 on Saturday for the first time since last September, according to data from Glassnode. The implication is that investors would refuse to sell until prices rose.

“The SOPR metric has been reliable for ‘buy the dip’ opportunities in bull markets,” Norwegian blockchain firm Arcane Research wrote in a tweet on Monday.

“In a bull market, investors are more inclined to take profit until the stop-profit point and refuse any stop-loss orders,” crypto analytics account BeatleNews on Chinese-language based social media platform Weibo, wrote in a post Sunday night, “When SOPR is below 1, the available coins for sale will decrease and it becomes easier for prices to rebound.”

Key support levels

On the price chart, as bitcoin dropped near $43,000 on Sunday, it was just above a key supporting price range of $40,000-$42,000, as mapped out by Singapore-based crypto trading firm QCP Capital in its Telegram channel on Feb 22. (See chart above.)

The price range represents “the hedge fund trading level corresponding to the parabolic trendline,” QCP Capital wrote. “This has to hold to preserve the strong bullish momentum, and is now the bull and bear line in the sand.”

Derivative market resets as funding rates drop

Bitcoin’s futures markets continued to cool down over the past weekend, a sign traders were reducing risk and deleveraging, and possibly resetting for a fresh bull run. The perpetual futures funding rate – the average cost of holding long positions on major exchanges – declined to 0.006% per eight-hour period Saturday, from 0.125% on Wednesday, according to Glassnode.

The perpetual futures funding rate in the past three months, as shown on Glassnode’s chart, rose during each price surge and followed with a correction after it climbed to a new peak.

Stock rebound might bode well for bitcoin

A recovery in U.S. stocks on Monday may also signal a renewed appetite among investors for risky assets, which would include bitcoin. The cryptocurrency’s sell-off last week came as a rise U.S. Treasury bond yields prompted concerns the Federal Reserve might soon tighten monetary policy. Bitcoin has benefited over the past year from unusually loose monetary policy.

The yield on 10-year Treasury notes, the benchmark borrowing cost in global debt markets, dropped to 1.43% on Monday, which has eased some investors’ nerves on potential tightened monetary policies.

As crypto trading data firm Skew wrote in a tweet last Friday, the correlation between stocks and bitcoin rose last week because both markets lost altitude as bond yields climbed.

“Let’s see how this evolves,” Bendik Norheim Schei, head of research at Arcane Research, told CoinDesk. “A break above $52,000 would be encouraging but I would not be surprised if we get some more ranging. It’s been a good start of the week in traditional markets and if last week’s uncertainty is over, I expect bitcoin to continue up as well.”

Ether joins bitcoin in price recovery

Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, was up Monday, trading around $1,520.44 and climbing 7.26% in 24 hours as of 21:00 UTC (4:00 p.m. ET).

Ether continued to move in tandem with bitcoin, yet a key market indicator has shown some potential risks of ether’s price movement going forward.

According to Skew, Grayscale Ethereum Trust (ETHE) premium flipped negative last week, meaning the trust was trading at a discount to the spot price, the first time ETHE ever closed in negative territory.

“Our worry is the many players using Grayscale Bitcoin Trust and ETHE as part of their cash-and-carry strategy and whether a sustained discount there will have severe knock-on effects across the curve,” QCP Capital wrote in its Telegram channel on Sunday. “This is our risk going into March.”

Grayscale is owned by Digital Currency Group, CoinDesk’s parent company.

Cardano Becomes a Multi-Asset Blockchain With Today’s Hard Fork

5 years 7 months ago

The Cardano blockchain, which runs the ADA token, will become a multi-asset chain with its hard fork today.

Named “Mary,” the hard fork will allow users to create tokens that run on Cardano natively, just as ADA does. Enabling new tokens was one of the first big use cases that caught on for Ethereum, enabling 2017’s multi-billion dollar initial coin offering splurge.

In a video update previewing the hard fork, Charles Hoskinson, founder of IOHK, the company behind Cardano, called the move “historic.”

Related: Why Banks Are More Serious About Crypto Than Ever

Hoskinson said that for node operators, the transition should be fairly simple. They just need to update their software and everything should work well. “We’ve been testing it for almost a month, and the test looks good. Exchanges are happy,” he said in the video.

Enabling new tokens is a step on the path to full smart-contract functionality.

Cardano recently became the third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. Besides founding IOHK, Hoskinson was previously a co-founder of Ethereum and also of BitShares, with Dan Larimer.

Cardano’s ADA Token Tripled in February to Outperform CoinDesk 20

5 years 7 months ago

Cardano, a smart-contract blockchain aiming to rival market leader Ethereum, tripled in February to dominate performance rankings among the CoinDesk 20 digital assets.

The gains came during a bullish month across the board for cryptocurrencies, with bitcoin (BTC), the largest, posting a 36% return. Ether (ETH), the second-biggest and the native token of the Ethereum blockchain, climbed 7.4% on the month.

But it was Cardano and other Ethereum alternatives that topped the rankings. Aside from the 274% gain for Cardano’s ADA token, the ATOM token from Cosmos rose 122%, based on CoinDesk pricing.

Related: Why Banks Are More Serious About Crypto Than Ever

Cardano’s gains were so impressive that its market capitalization climbed to about $40 billion, becoming the third-most-valuable digital asset and vaulting past cryptocurrencies like bitcoin cash (BCH) and litecoin (LTC) that had led the industry standings in recent years. XRP, the token used in Ripple Labs’ payment network, fell 15% on the month.

ADA climbed to a new all-time high of $1.49 on Feb. 27, topping the peak price of $1.30 reached in early 2018 at the tail end of the last bull market for cryptocurrencies.

The ebullience in the market for ADA might eventually contend with some of the network’s realities. While touted as an “Ethereum competitor,” Cardano doesn’t as yet have any smart-contract functionality. Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK), the developer team behind the blockchain, has taken a long-term approach to developing the network. For example, Cardano only recently transitioned out of the hands of IOHK and into the community’s control with July’s “Shelley” hard fork.

The “Mary” hard fork scheduled for today will allow users to create new tokens that run on Cardano natively, just as ADA does.

Related: Mining Bitcoin for Heat, Strawberries and Chickens

Goguen is the next hard fork on the docket for IOHK CEO and Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson. That upgrade should occur in the first half of 2021 and should introduce smart contracts, the team claims.

That being said, it’s likely that unit bias – when investors buy a cheaper alternative asset given its lower price against more established ones  – is coming into play for the cryptocurrency given its low price per unit compared to other cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, ether or even Polkadot’s DOT.

DeFi Money Market Compound Embraces Multi-Chain Future With ‘Gateway’ Testnet

5 years 7 months ago

The Gateway testnet – the next home for decentralized finance (DeFi) money market Compound – is now live.

The Substrate-based blockchain is fully embracing interoperability, where application developers build on every base layer and not just Ethereum, Compound Finance founder Robert Leshner said in a phone interview.

“Gateway is really designed for a multi-chain future where assets live on multiple blockchains and where decentralized finance applications and logic runs on multiple blockchains as well,” Leshner said.

Related: Why Banks Are More Serious About Crypto Than Ever

The project was first laid out in a December 2020 white paper under the name Compound Chain with specific reference to catering to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). It’s currently available via Ethereum’s Ropsten testnet.

“Ethereum might be the core of where most applications and assets live, but there are going to be popular DeFi applications on other chains and there are going to be popular assets issued on other chains. Gateway is designed to connect Ethereum between different blockchains so users can move value between them more easily,” he added.

Leshner said Gateway will be able to port assets from one blockchain to another using Gateway specific bridges called “starports.” An Ethereum starport is now active on testnet, he said, with the community responsible for adding further bridges. He expects the testnet to run for two months before fully launching.

As on off-shoot of Compound, Gateway will be governed by the same COMP token first released in June 2020. The same rights and responsibilities associated with the token accrue to owners on Gateway, such as the ability to add new assets. Yet, as Substrate-based blockchain, Gateway will have increased functionality given its highly modular design, Leshner said.

“When there’s a new version of the blockchain, there is not a hard fork,” Leshner said of Gateway’s flexibility. “You can update the chain in real time … whenever that code is ready.”

Through Gateway, Compound Finance could become the keystone to an envisioned “multi-chain future” where Ethereum quite simply isn’t enough to handle a new financial system. Ethereum-compatible chains like NEAR, Polkdaot, Solana and now Gateway are bets on this hypothesis coming true.

Gateway, Leshner said, “is designed to be a cross-chain tool and not a scaling tool.” The new chain will someday provide a bridge for assets without demanding token wrapping or other piecemeal shortcuts for getting blockchains to talk to each other.

Layer 2 solutions like rollups are important, Leshner said, but miss the point on what a multi-chain future is trying to accomplish. Having different chains means different rule sets can talk with each other and exchange value. With rollups, you still operate under Ethereum’s governance structure.

“We love all these scaling solutions for Ethereum. All of those are going to make Ethereum cheaper and more usable and that’s a good thing,” he said. “We’ve looked at all those solutions but they don’t really achieve what we want to do

Goldman Sachs Relaunching Crypto Trading Desk After 3-Year Pause

5 years 7 months ago

Investment bank Goldman Sachs has relaunched its cryptocurrency trading desk after a three-year hiatus and plans to once again support bitcoin futures trading, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to CoinDesk. Contrary to an earlier report by Reuters, the source said the service would resume in mid-March, not next week.

The desk is part of a broader push into digital assets that may see Goldman attempt to stage a bitcoin exchange-traded fund, Reuters said. It will be a part of Goldman’s U.S. Global Markets division.

The bank had originally planned to launch a crypto desk in 2017 but shelved those plans in 2018 due to regulatory concerns.

CoinDesk reported in January that Goldman was looking to re-enter the cryptocurrency industry, including with a custody offering, within the coming months.

The move follows fellow megabank BNY Mellon announcing last month a crypto custody service, reportedly in partnership with Fireblocks. Once BNY Mellon is holding bitcoin on clients’ behalf, it may roll out additional services, the bank suggested in an interview with CoinDesk.

Investing in Cryptocurrencies Is ‘Not Prudent,’ Says New York Attorney General

5 years 7 months ago

Warning of the “extreme risks” of cryptocurrencies, New York State Attorney General Letitia James published a statement Monday saying investing in digital assets is “not prudent.”

James’ tweet comes after her office released an “alert to investors” of the risks involved in cryptocurrency markets. The memo includes risks such as “underlying value is highly subjective and unpredictable,” “increased risk of market manipulation,” and potential difficulties in cashing out of investments.

The warning to investors comes amid strong interest from retail investors who are contributing significantly to bitcoin‘s ongoing rally and are matched with increasing demand from institutional and corporate buyers, per CoinDesk previous reporting.

The Attorney General had a message for industry participants, too. After suing investment application Coinseed and settling an inquiry with Tether and Bitfinex, James said Monday, “We’re sending a clear message to the entire industry that you either play by the rules or we will shut you down.”

A spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.

Fidelity’s Head of Global Macro Says Bitcoin May Have Place in Some Portfolios

5 years 7 months ago

The bullishness shown by Fidelity Investments’ cryptocurrency-focused arm appears to be spreading to the rest of the investments giant, with Director of Global Macro Jurrien Timmer now comparing bitcoin directly to gold.

  • Timmer told investors in a February research note that bitcoin may be emerging as a legitimate hedge against inflation and stable store of value as a form of “digital gold.” “In my view, bitcoin has gone mainstream.”
  • What’s noteworthy here is Timmer is not part of the investment giant’s digital assets arm that is, almost by remit, disposed to be pro-crypto. Instead, he’s part of the broader company and his pro-bitcoin report speaks to the cryptocurrency’s increasingly warm welcome on Wall Street.
  • Grappling with how to model the cryptocurrency, Timmer noted that, if evaluated against simple supply and demand metrics, demand continues to grow “exponentially” while supply remains fixed. That scenario does not apply to gold, whose annual production has remained steady over time. “Bitcoin supply, by design, is finite.”
  • He said the monetary environment naturally favors bitcoin. “With interest rates close to zero – or negative – and central banks printing money like there’s no tomorrow, is it any wonder that bitcoin seems to be having its day?”
  • While Timmer admitted bitcoin’s risks – including volatility – may not amount to a “prudent” investment choice for all, he said it could nonetheless find a home in the bonds slice for certain portfolios. “For those investors, the question of bitcoin may no longer be ‘whether’ but ‘how much?'”
  • He also said that he expects bitcoin “over time” will take more market share from gold.
