'Naomi Osaka' portrays a young athlete wrestling with the weight of stardom
"Naomi Osaka" tackles a lot more than just tennis, but this Netflix docuseries (really just a 110-minute documentary sliced into three parts) works best as a window into the demands placed on young athletes, and the pressures -- from personal to political to marketing -- that go with it. On that level alone it's a winner, despite a few faults.
'Schmigadoon!' spoofs old musicals, in a series that's too cute for its own good
"Schmigadoon!" was clearly made by and for people who love musicals, for better and occasionally worse. Seeking to create enough original music to power a TV series is always a major challenge, with the added burden that the songs in this 10-episode Apple TV+ show are largely spoofs aimed at those who have spent too much time watching Turner Classic Movies.

'McCartney 3,2,1' takes the former Beatle on a magical walk down memory lane
"Senior citizen reminisces about music" -- in black and white, no less -- doesn't sound like a classic elevator pitch, until you see that guy is Paul McCartney, leading a magical tour down memory lane for the Beatles, their influences and a whole lot else. Playing on Hulu, "McCartney 3,2,1" will soon have company from Peter Jackson's Disney+ project, but like the man used to say, live and let live.
'Space Jam: A New Legacy' lets LeBron James jump into Michael Jordan's shoes
Debates over LeBron James' greatness compared to Michael Jordan on a basketball court will continue in perpetuity, but "Space Jam: A New Legacy" won't fuel much chatter about who's the better actor. Putting James in Jordan's shoes, as it were, isn't a bad idea in theory, but despite the odd moment of inspired Looney Tune-acy, this reboot shoots a very loud and thudding airball.

'Gunpowder Milkshake' gives action fans a violent bang for their buck
Offering a weird mix of over-the-top violence and dark humor, "Gunpowder Milkshake" weds the spaghetti western with the colorful visuals of anime, enhancing that with an inordinately good cast for such a silly movie. The net result provides considerable fun, which might explain reports that its French distributor is already developing a sequel.
