Crypto User Numbers Double in 6 Months

5 years 3 months ago

The number of crypto users doubled in the first half, according to Crypto.com.

  • Research carried out by the exchange identified more than 220 million users of crypto by the end of June, according to an emailed statement.
  • The company said it used on-chain data and other parameters to compile the figures from 24 of the largest crypto platforms.
  • February to May was particularly active, with numbers surging to 203 million from 106 million. Much of the growth during May, when China’s clampdown on bitcoin miners tightened and Tesla CEO Elon Musk commented on bitcoin’s carbon footprint, came from adoption of altcoins. The share of altcoin holders increased from as low as 20% of the total between January and April to about 37% in May and June.
  • The figure compares with the nine months it took for the user base to reach 100 million from 65 million.
  • “The growth we have seen in the first half of 2021 on our platform and industry-wide is very encouraging, and we will continue investing heavily as we pursue our goal of putting cryptocurrency in every wallet,” Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek said in the statement.

Lending Platform Vauld Raises $25M in Round Led by Peter Thiel-Founded Venture Firm

5 years 3 months ago

Singapore-based lender Vauld raised $25 million in Series A funding to expand its retail crypto banking platform in a round led by Peter Thiel-founded Valar Ventures.

  • Existing investors Pantera Capital and Coinbase Ventures also participated, the company said Thursday.
  • Vauld, most of whose team is located in India, forms part of the broader picture of crypto firms seeking the appropriate licensing and registration to operate as fully fledged banks offering lending and savings products.
  • As well as building out its platform, Vauld intends to use the investment to drive international expansion.
  • Having established a foothold in India, the firm told CoinDesk in December 2020 that it intends to expand its licensing to other markets such as Singapore, the U.K. and the crypto-friendly U.S. state of Wyoming.
  • “What cemented the deal is Vauld’s global positioning and ambitions and [its] vision have for building customers’ wealth through crypto,” said Andrew McCormack, co-founder of Valar Ventures, alongside billionaire entrepreneur and PayPal founder Peter Thiel.

Bitcoin Overbought at $40K Resistance; Support at $34K-$36K

5 years 3 months ago

Bitcoin (BTC) completed a recovery from Monday’s 10% pullback and is now re-testing the $40,000 resistance level. The cryptocurrency appears overbought, which could trigger some profit taking after a near 25% rally over the past week.

Lower support is seen around $34,000-$36,000, which is the middle of a two-month range.

  • The relative strength index (RSI) on the four-hour chart is declining from an extreme overbought reading on Monday. A lower high on the RSI indicates a bearish divergence, which could stall bitcoin’s short-term uptrend.
  • Initial support is seen at the 50-period moving average on the four-hour chart, currently at $36,000. Lower support is around $32,000-$34,000, which could stabilize a pullback.
  • The intermediate-term trend is improving with a significant loss of downside momentum over the past few weeks. Buyers could remain active at lower support levels, although a breakout above $40,000-$45,000 is needed to resume the long-term uptrend.

Decentralized Video Protocol Livepeer Raises $20M to Take On Streaming Giants

5 years 3 months ago

Livepeer, a decentralized video transcoding platform built on Ethereum, has raised $20 million in a funding round led by Digital Currency Group (DCG).

DCG was joined in the Series B funding round by several other noteworthy investors in the crypto space including Coinbase Ventures, CoinFund and Northzone. (CoinDesk is an independent subsidiary of DCG.)

As the Web 3 ecosystem continues to grow, dapp developers are working on decentralized alternatives to everything from financial products to entertainment, including gaming and music-streaming.

But many would-be decentralized streaming platforms and startups encounter trouble building with centralized infrastructure owned by tech giants like Amazon and Google, said Livepeer co-founder Doug Petkanics.

He said the marketplace allows for a symbiotic relationship between buyers and sellers that is incentivized by Livepeer’s native token, LPT, and is much cheaper than the services provided by mainstream alternatives.

Livepeer’s marketplace connects encoding providers – many of whom are crypto miners and data centers with otherwise unused capacity – to anyone who needs processing power for video services. Livepeer has an estimated 70,000 GPUs on its network.

“In creating an open market run by a decentralized network of active participants, Livepeer’s transcoding can be 10 times cheaper (or more) than centralized alternatives like Amazon Web Services,” CoinFund CEO Jake Brukhman said in a press statement.

EU-Backed Investment Fund Puts $30M Into Crypto VC Firm’s New $130M Vehicle

5 years 3 months ago

At a time when many crypto VCs are raising funds, London-based Fabric Ventures has closed a $130 million war chest for investing in early-stage blockchain firms.

The notable thing, however, is one of its backers: the European Investment Fund (EIF) – which is comprised of the European Investment Bank, the European Union and other financial institutions – chipped in $30 million.

It’s the first time a vehicle affiliated with the European Commission has invested in a fund focused on digital assets.

Other notable backers include Ethereum and Polkadot co-founder Gavin Wood as well as 33 other tech executives from firms including PayPal, Square, Google, PayU, Galaxy Digital and Ledger.

It’s heady days for venture capital in fintech, with crypto and blockchain as a subset of that also breaking records with each passing quarter.

Despite the recent euphoria, however, Fabric Ventures co-founder and managing partner Richard Muirhead said his team has been in talks with the EIF since as far back as December 2019.

“Raising venture capital in Europe has lagged behind the U.S.,” Muirhead said in an interview. “Europe has come on leaps and bounds, but needs to do even better with backing new managers and new strategies.”

Related: The Node: Europe’s Hidden Agenda on Crypto Wallets

EIF Chief Executive Alain Godard said in a statement that the Fabric partnership was “of particular strategic importance for the EU and our competitiveness on the global stage,” adding:

“Despite their rich engineering talent, entrepreneurs in the blockchain sector in Europe often struggle to find financial support and investors that have a deep understanding of their space. This partnership seeks to address that need and unlock financing opportunities for entrepreneurs active in the field of blockchain technologies.”

Fabric Ventures, previously called Firestartr, began taking an interest in blockchain and crypto back in 2013, Muirhead said. As well as investing directly into bitcoin and ether, the firm made early bets on Polkadot, MakerDAO, Tagomi, Bitstamp, Decentraland and 1inch, to name a few.

“Fabric supported an early Ethereum meetup I led in January 2014 and followed my team as we spun out Parity in 2016,” Wood, the Ethereum co-founder, said via email. “So we were very happy to have them as a backer in 2017 when we launched Polkadot. They have supported the Web3 Foundation ecosystem throughout and ongoing.”

Given that Fabric has already made investments in specialized areas of crypto including games like Axie Infinity, what’s next?

“I think there are European-grown refinements to synthetic assets and stablecoins,” said Muirhead. “Another rich area is improved gameplay, combined with great circular economics; so, the ecosystem of yields and lending, and what’s required for play-to-earn around that.”

UPDATE (JULY 29, 10:41 UTC): Fabric updates total amount raised to $130 million.

Fetch.ai Token Has Volatile First Day on Coinbase, Listing Still ‘Groundbreaking,’ CEO Says

5 years 3 months ago

The price of Fetch.ai’s native token (FET) has endured a roller-coaster run over the last 24 hours following its listing on the U.S. cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase on Wednesday.

More important than price, however, is that the listing itself is a “groundbreaking moment” for the blockchain machine-learning platform, Fetch CEO Humayun Sheikh told CoinDesk via a spokesperson on Wednesday.

FET is an token that is based on the Ethereum blockchain and that powers applications on Fetch’s platform, which provides users access to artificial intelligence and autonomous agents in manufacturing and supply chains, among other areas.

Prior to the listing, most of Fetch’s retail investors came from Europe.

The listing “has a very powerful branding effect on the project,” Sheikh said. “With millions of retail investors based in the U.S. looking to invest in cryptos beyond bitcoin and ether, the FET token will gain additional awareness and trading volume due to the listing.”

Prices for FET shot up in the days prior to the announcement, rising 75% from July 17 lows of around $0.19 to a top of $0.42 on Monday, two days prior to Fetch’s big moment, Binance data show.

That is not unusual for a coin being listed on one of the world’s best-known exchanges. Often dubbed the “Coinbase Effect,” the phenomenon is when a cryptocurrency experiences a sharp uptick in price preceding and following its listing.

After the listing, though, a crypto’s price tends to cool as speculative traders look to cash in on the hype surrounding the crypto’s new home. On Coinbase, prices for FET are down considerably from a local high of $0.65 on Tuesday. That’s $0.23 more than Binance’s local top.

Asked if the project would liquidate some of the value of its tokens to fund further development of the platform, the CEO said Fetch “keeps all options open” but generally focuses on investors and partnerships.

Sheikh also said that while he isn’t at liberty to discuss the process for a Coinbase listing, it did involve a “lot of due diligence” on security, legal, technical and compliance matters.

The “process can take months and years as they review every aspect of the project before they decide to go ahead,” Sheikh said.

FET was last seen changing hands for around $0.34 on Coinbase with lower- than-average hourly trading volume following price action that had cooled down by Wednesday evening.

Bank of America Calls CBDCs ‘More Effective’ Than Cash in Research Note

5 years 3 months ago

Bank of America (BofA) called central bank digital currencies “a much more effective payment system than cash,” in a research paper published Wednesday.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based bank, the second largest in the U.S. by total assets, said that CBDCs could “replace cash completely in the (distant) future.”

The report comes amid surging interest among central banks. A May report by the blockchain infrastructure platform Bison Trails found that about 80% of central banks are exploring use cases involving CBDCs, with 40% already testing proof-of-concept programs.

Related: Bank of Estonia Finds ‘Unlimited’ Potential in Digital Euro Test

Bank of America said that CBDC adoption was “inevitable,” citing a declining role for cash, the private sector’s increasing use of blockchain technology, loss of control over currency and CBDCs’ potential to boost the economy. It also noted that central banks that did not launch their own digital currencies could see decreasing demand for their currencies, “substantially in some cases,” and a smaller “global role.”

Addressing concerns that a CBDC could compete with bank deposits, spur bank runs and compromise individual security, the paper highlighted central banks’ “very cautious approach.”

The paper said that CBDCs qualified as money “by allowing store of value and being a unit of account and means of exchange,” differentiating them from cryptocurrencies that “do not meet these criteria. “Since they are traded, they could be seen as an asset class,” the paper said.

Bank of America said that CBDCs could lessen the need for stablecoins, noting that the latter could “present a material financial stability risk during times of market stress when there may be a crypto to fiat currency run.”

In recent months, Bank of America has ratcheted up its own commitment to provide more cryptocurrency services and explore crypto’s potential.

The bank has created a team dedicated to researching cryptocurrencies and related technologies, according to a memo reviewed by CoinDesk earlier this month. Separately, it has also approved the trading of bitcoin (BTC, +0.63%) futures for some clients, and its prime brokerage unit has started the clearing and settlement of cryptocurrency exchange-traded products (ETPs) for hedge funds in Europe.

Think Tank Rand Says Crypto Should Be Included in US-Japan Digital Trade Deal

5 years 3 months ago

Cryptocurrencies should be written into a major Japan-U.S. trade agreement inked in 2019, according to experts from a prominent think tank.

In a blog post on Wednesday, senior policy analyst Sale Lilly and senior political scientist Scott Harold of the RAND Corporation said the deal was a missed opportunity for the crypto industry.

“Given that some of the earliest cryptocurrency markets began in Japan, and that many of the largest companies originate in the U.S., this decision was somewhat surprising,” the pair wrote.

Related: Monex Nets $100M First-Quarter Profit Driven by Crypto Trading

The 2019 agreement was a “landmark” document touching on a number of topics that had yet to make an appearance in previous international trade discussions.

Digital representations of a photo, movie, or song as well as trading an algorithm now formulate components of bilateral trade covered by the agreement which prevents the creation of new tariffs between the two countries.

With the beginnings of new political regimes in Washington and Tokyo, it may be time to reconsider the exclusion of crypto in the deal, Lilly and Harold wrote.

The art of the deal

The deal, which was inked during Donald Trump’s presidency and ahead of other major international digital trade agreements, is “especially prescient” given it came right before the outbreak of COVID-19, the pair said.

Related: Ripple On-Demand Liquidity Corridor Opens Between Japan and Philippines

Though, as it stands, there is no mention of cryptos and only some aspects of blockchain may land within the remit of the tariff-free structure.

“The reality … is that blockchain systems are often deployed alongside better-established networks, like Ethereum or Cardano, that do employ tokens and digital currency,” they said.

Concerns arise from the potential to retroactively tack tariffs onto budding blockchain and crypto businesses as long as cryptos remain excluded from the agreement.

To rectify this, Lilly and Harold said the U.S. and Japan could formulate a new agreement covering crypto and digital assets or else reinterpret the terms of the 2019 agreement.

RAND’s approach and analysis of cryptos have changed significantly in recent years given their development amid significant regulatory evolutions in the space. In 2015, the think tank released a 100-page report focusing on scenarios in which entities in conflict zones could seek to use a digital currency for nefarious means.

“A clear, jointly-negotiated U.S.-Japan agreement toward regulating the use of cryptocurrencies in international trade may be an idea whose time has come,” Lilly and Harold wrote.

Robinhood IPO Priced at Lower End of Range, Firm Valued at $32B

5 years 3 months ago

Stock and crypto-trading app Robinhood has secured a $32 billion valuation via its initial public offering (IPO) and is set to debut on the Nasdaq exchange on Thursday.

  • According to a press release on Wednesday, Robinhood has priced its offering at $38 per Class A common stock share.
  • The pricing is at the lower end of the $38-$42 per share price range the company had targeted and had planned on selling 5.5 million shares targeting a $1.89 billion raise.
  • Net proceeds from the sale will go toward working capital, capital expenditures, funding tax obligations, hiring efforts, customer support services, among others.
  • Shares will be listed on the Nasdaq Global Select Market while Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan are acting as joint lead book-running managers, according to the release.
  • Earlier this month, Robinhood began unconventionally offering a portion of its IPO to users via its app — a view some consider to be a risky gamble.
  • Known for its zero-fee trading structure, the company has continued to endure hits to its image as well as legal and political ramifications stemming from the fallout of the GameStop saga and limitations to users trading crypto.
  • The company is trying to reshape that image and is reportedly working on a new feature that will help protect users from crypto price volatility while hiring a former Google alumn to improve its overall product design.
  • Still, the company’s CEO Vlad Tenev is staring down allegations from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority over his failure to register Robinhood Financial relating to compliance issues.

BlockFi Gets More Time From NJ Regulators Before New Interest Accounts Are Banned

5 years 3 months ago

Crypto lender BlockFi has been given at least another month before a block on the creation of all new BlockFi Interest Accounts (BIAs) ordered by the New Jersey Bureau of Securities (NJ BOS) takes effect.

BlockFi tweeted on Wednesday that the postponement followed ongoing talks between BlockFi and NJ BOS “to provide more details about the BIA.”

NJ BOS’s order was originally set to go into effect on July 22, and then was delayed until July 29.

Related: Blockchain Australia Recommends Safe Harbor Provision for Crypto Providers

BlockFi is facing similar scrutiny of its interest-bearing crypto accounts from Texas and Alabama. In its tweet, BlockFi said it is in “active dialogue with multiple regulators” regarding its BIAs.

NJ BOS has argued that the BlockFi Interest Accounts amount to unregistered securities, while BlockFi has said that they are not.

“We firmly believe that the BIA is lawful and appropriate for crypto market participants, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to fight for consumers rights to earn interest on their crypto assets,” BlockFi wrote in its tweet on Wednesday.

BlockFi had no additional comment on the matter, while the NJ BOS could not be immediately reached.

Related: Vermont Joins Ranks of States Probing Crypto Lender BlockFi

BlockFi has maintained that the New Jersey order does not affect existing BlockFi customers, nor any of its other products, a claim the NJ BOS order appears to support.

Less clear, though, is the extent to which this could impact new BlockFi customers, and whether the order’s impact could spread beyond New Jersey.

NJ BOS has said BlockFi holds $14.7 billion in assets through its BIA product, although how much of that is held by New Jersey consumers is unclear.

The New Jersey-based company has indicated it plans to go public within the next 12 to 18 months.

New Infrastructure Bill Looks to Raise $30B Through Crypto Taxes

5 years 3 months ago

A bipartisan infrastructure bill in Congress proposes to raise $28 billion from crypto investors by applying new information reporting requirements to exchanges and other parties.

According to a draft copy of the bill shared with CoinDesk, any broker that transfers any digital assets would need to file a return under a modified information reporting regime. The draft defined digital assets as “any digital representation of value … recorded on a cryptographically secured distributed ledger” or related technology. It also includes decentralized exchanges and peer-to-peer marketplaces in its definition of brokers.

A separate summary of the bill further clarified that cryptocurrencies are treated as a subsection of the broader digital asset umbrella.

Related: Senate Banking Committee Bashes Bitcoin’s ‘Phony’ Populism

“The provision includes updating the definition of broker to reflect the realities of how digital assets are acquired and traded,” the document said. “The provision further makes clear that broker-to-broker reporting applies to all transfers of covered securities within the meaning of section 6045(g)(3), including digital assets.”

This could bring up to $30 billion into the bill’s “pay-fors,” according to a fact sheet also shared with CoinDesk.

“Additionally, digital assets are added to the current rules requiring businesses to report cash payments over $10,000,” the fact sheet said.

The crypto reporting requirements are among a list of 14 new “pay-fors” included in the bill, which also includes repurposing COVID-19 relief funds, auctions, Superfund fees, fuel sales and other sources of revenue.

Related: State of Crypto: Stablecoin Rules Are Coming

Kristin Smith, executive director of the Blockchain Association, told CoinDesk the draft language could mean a number of individuals interacting with crypto may have to start reporting their transactions.

“We interpret this to mean software wallet developers, hardware wallet manufacturers, multisig service providers, liquidity providers, DAO token holders and potentially even miners,” she said.

The $1 trillion infrastructure bill also includes provisions for funding public transit, particularly passenger rail; investments in bridges, clean drinking water and wastewater infrastructure; and high-speed internet access for all Americans, among other provisions, according to a White House fact sheet.

The U.S. Senate may conduct a test vote as early as Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said.

In a statement, U.S. President Joe Biden praised the team that negotiated the bill, saying neither side got 100% of what it wanted.

“Everyone from unions to business leaders and economists left, right and center believe the public investments in this deal will mean more jobs, higher productivity, and higher growth for our economy over the long term. Experts believe that the majority of the deal’s benefits will flow to working families,” he said in a statement.

A previous Biden budget proposal also includes new crypto reporting requirements.

PayPal Q2 Transaction Revenue Rose 17%; Earnings Top Estimates

PayPal’s (PYPL) Q2 transaction revenue rose 17% to $5.80 billion from $4.95 billion in the year-earlier period.

Quarter over quarter, transaction revenue rose by 3%, from $5.6 billion.

Part of PayPal’s transaction revenue comes from the company’s crypto buy, sell and hold product, but the company excludes crypto payments from total payment volume.

The payments giant also added 11.4 million in net new active accounts in Q2, down from the 23.3 million in year-earlier period and below the 14.5 million it added in Q1.

Overall, PayPal topped expectations with Q2 adjusted earnings of $1.15, above the consensus estimate of $1.12 according to FactSet.

Q2 2021 is the third quarter PayPal has reported earnings including results from its crypto buying and selling product. The company has reported in the past that customers who purchased crypto through the platform have been logging into PayPal twice as often as they were before they could buy crypto.

In April of this year, PayPal added crypto buy, sell, and hold options to its peer-to-peer payments platform Venmo.

PayPal is also working on the ability to transfer crypto to third party wallets and create a more seamless process for tax reporting, Schulman said.

Schulman said This isn’t the “main course” for the crypto offering at Paypal, however.

“We are clearly thinking about what the next generation of the financial system looks like, how we can help shape that,” Schulman said. “We are working with regulatory agencies, central banks across the world. The number of countries that are looking at central bank issued digital currencies is increasing rapidly.”

Market Wrap: Bitcoin Expected to Pause Before Next Rally

Bitcoin buyers are in profit-taking mode as the cryptocurrency tests the $40,000 resistance level. Sentiment has significantly improved over the past week, although some analysts think it’s time for a pause before another leg higher.

“BTC easily broke through $35K, but I think it will probably have a harder time going through $40K this time,” Justin Chuh, a senior trader at Wave Financial, wrote in an email to CoinDesk.

“Miners & sellers are coming in to cash out once more and buyers unable to push it higher after absorbing that hit,” Chuh wrote.

Sentiment can easily shift from bullish to bearish as bitcoin remains in a consolidation phase with strong overhead resistance.

“If (and when) bitcoin does cross the 200-day, this will signal confidence in the market and demonstrate to many players that the bulls have regained control of the market,” Alexandra Clark, a trader at U.K.-based digital-asset broker GlobalBlock, wrote in an email to CoinDesk.

For now, trading activity is sharply higher compared with June. Short-dated call options were actively traded Wednesday morning as bitcoin approached $40,000, according to data from Skew.

GBTC discount narrows

Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) shares have narrowed their discount relative to the underlying cryptocurrency held in the fund – possibly a sign that buyers are using the vehicle to bet on the recent recovery rally in digital-asset markets.

The GBTC shares traded at a discount of 6.6% to net asset value (NAV) on Tuesday, the smallest margin since June 22, based on data provided by the crypto derivatives research firm Skew. The discount had widened to 15% in mid-June.

Some investors may have snapped up GBTC shares in hopes that the discount will evaporate with a bull revival in bitcoin. In that scenario, the buyers would reap any price gains on bitcoin while pocketing extra profit from a narrowing of the discount. (Grayscale Investments, which manages the trust, is a unit of Digital Currency Group, which also owns CoinDesk.)

Ether trading volumes surge

The ether market grew three times faster than the bitcoin market did in the first six months of the year as large investors diversified into the native token of Ethereum’s blockchain, according to crypto exchange Coinbase’s half-yearly review published on Monday.

Crypto CEOs are bullish

Crypto investors have just endured one of the toughest quarters on record. Despite a recent rebound, fears of overregulation, a clampdown on mining in China and environmental concerns have all contributed to negative sentiment in the sector. Most CoinDesk 20 assets, which constitute about 99% of the crypto market by verifiable volume, finished the second quarter with negative returns.

The CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index (XBX) fell 40%, its third-worst quarter ever. Conversely, the CoinDesk Ether Price Index (ETX) ended the quarter up 18.7%. While bitcoin has recovered some of its losses, the level of optimism is far from what it was at the start of the second quarter.

Some crypto CEOs, however, still expect a six-figure bitcoin price, saying that the medium-term outlook for the crypto market is positive, even if sentiment is not, CoinDesk’s Will Canny reports.

Why stablecoins are in the spotlight

Stablecoins have existed for roughly seven years, but talk about them has never been as heated as in recent weeks, not only within the crypto community but also among regulators and traditional market investors.

Much has been going on the world of stablecoins recently, and some of it can be overwhelming. Here are the three big things happening now:

  • Tether is under a cloud: As the most traded cryptocurrency in the market, USDT has become a backbone for the entire cryptocurrency ecosystem. Over half of all bitcoin trades are made against it. However, Tether, the company behind the digital token, has been plagued by regulatory issues.
  • Regulatory heat: Stablecoins had a total market capitalization of $116 billion as of Monday, an almost fourfold increase since the start of this year, according to CoinMarketCap. As growth has increased, so has the attention from U.S. and other regulators.
  • Circle going public, other stablecoin issuers disclose more info: Circle, the issuer of USDC, the second largest stablecoin, has also been in the spotlight. Circle plans to go public through a merger with Concord Acquisition Corp., a publicly traded special purpose acquisition corporation (SPAC). The deal would value the crypto financial services firm at $4.5 billion. Another stablecoin issuer, Paxos, also released for the first time a breakdown of reserves for its stablecoins, Paxos standard and the Binance-labeled BUSD. Traders, Unswayed by Axie Infinity Hype, Are Aggressively Shorting AXS

5 years 3 months ago

Guess who may not be fans of the blazing Ethereum-based gaming platform Axie Infinity?

It’s crypto traders – surprising given that AXS, the governance token of Axie Infinity, has logged a year-to-date price return of over 7,000%, compared with bitcoin’s roughly 33% and ether’s 212%, according to Messari.

This trader bearishness could affect the price of the AXS token despite Axie Infinity being a blockchain-based project with solid fundamentals and great revenue models.

“The euphoric-herd mentality pushed the valuation to extremes and, as with any overcrowded trade, once the unwind takes place the price swings will be extremely volatile,” Denis Vinokourov, head of research at London-based quantitative finance management firm Synergia Capital, said. “The problem is market timing – timing the top of the market – is notoriously difficult.”

Trading data from crypto exchanges shows futures traders have been aggressively taking short positions on AXS, betting the token’s price bull run will face downward pressure soon, as the perpetual futures market for AXS has consistently seen negative funding rates.

The funding rate refers to the cost of holding long/short positions in one crypto’s perpetuals (futures with no expiry) market. The metric is used by exchanges offering perpetuals to balance the market and guide perpetual prices toward the spot price. A positive funding rate means longs are paying shorts to keep the position open, as the market is skewed bullish. A negative funding rate, meanwhile, implies a bearish sentiment towards the token associated with the perpetuals.

The funding rates for AXS perpetuals on the two major crypto exchanges offering such products, FTX and Binance, have been negative. At the time of writing, data from FTX shows the one-hour average annualized funding rate for AXS perpetuals was at -42.92%, while the eight-hour-basis funding rate of the AXS/USDT perpetuals on Binance has been negative for at least 14 days.

This bearish take by crypto traders looks odd as Axie Infinity, the Ethereum-based trading and battling game, has received much positive reaction from the market. The project has also quickly become the top protocol on the Ethereum blockchain by revenue.

Data from Token Terminal shows that Axie Infinity has logged the highest revenue in the past 30 days among all blockchain-based protocols, with roughly $148.7 million, only behind Ethereum blockchain itself, which is at $172.8 million.

Axie Infinity “is a company with a CEO, a parent company with privately owned equity, a real business model and rapidly growing revenues, all of which existed prior to Axie issuing its AXS token,” Jeff Dorman, chief investment officer at Los Angeles-based investment management firm Arca, wrote in his blog post dated July 12. “The token was issued to help bootstrap the growth of the company, and almost every customer and fan of the game had a chance to buy this token in the early days of its growth.”

The AXS token has also recovered well from the broader market sell-off on May 19, according to data from TradingView of Binance’s AXS/USDT pair.

Analysts said the difference in thinking between crypto traders looking at AXS and those hyped by the Axie Infinity project is not unexpected, especially after the May market crash. That’s because traders tend to take more aggressive trading strategies, hoping to maximize the potential returns.

“We just witnessed one of the most brutal crashes in crypto history,” Ashwath Balakrishnan, associate at blockchain research firm Delphi Digital, said. “Honestly, everyone was in disbelief at the beginning of this month when AXS started pumping. A lot of traders thought it was just a random market movement.”

Having missed out several price tops of AXS, crypto traders are trying to balance their “disbelief” that AXS has grown so rapidly with a “trying-to-make-it-all-back” mindset, according to Balakrishnan.

“When something goes parabolic, you have a large faction of people trying to short the top, so they start shorting on every new high,” Balakrishnan said. “And given this happened after people incurred losses or lost some of their unrealized profits, the stakes were higher for them and they shorted more aggressively.”

Institutions versus retail investors

Lennix Lai, director of financial markets at crypto exchange OKEx, also said that – based on the relatively balanced long and short ratio between AXS active buying volume and active selling volume on Binance, FTX and OKEx – it’s also possible that more institutional traders are taking shorting positions on AXS than retail traders.

“When there are more long accounts than short accounts, the funding would be negative because long accounts belong to retailers, and short accounts belong to institutional clients who hedge their funds,” Lai said.

Unlike Synergia Capital’s Vinokourov, who said the negative funding rate could lead to “unpredictable swings,” Lai said retail traders who are taking long positions can help AXS continue its rally.

“We do anticipate a significant response from retailers, as (Axie Infinity) is a project driven by consumers,” Lai said. “Even if a fund has a few short accounts, (AXS) may still outperform with many long accounts, resulting in a negative funding rate with a positive long-short ratio.”

OKEx launched trading products, including AXS margin, savings and USDT-margined perpetuals on Wednesday, Lai said.

But without further data partly because the market is still “nascent,”  Vinokourov said that it is also hard to know whether Axie Infinity would continue to generate revenue at the current high level.

Market participants “will not hesitate to switch from one hot toy to another – no different to the yield farming craze earlier in the year,” he said.

Mexico Regulator Says 12 Crypto Exchanges Are Operating Illegally

5 years 3 months ago

Mexico’s Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) has accused 12 crypto exchanges of not complying with its reporting requirements.

According to Santiago Nieto Castillo, head of the agency, the 12 exchanges, whose names weren’t disclosed, are not registered with the agency and have been operating illegally, local newspaper El Economista reported on Wednesday.

“We are generating cases so that the attorney general’s office can operate,” Nieto Castillo said during a seminar on financial intelligence and risk management.

UIF didn’t immediately respond to CoinDesk’s queries about the names of the crypto exchanges involved.

Nieto Castillo said that combating money laundering through cryptocurrencies is a priority for UIF.

“A fundamental issue will be to analyze cryptocurrencies and their relationship with criminal groups. I am struck by the fact that many of the cryptocurrency platforms are installed in several municipalities in the state of Jalisco,” Nieto Castillo said, referring to an area dominated by a drug cartel in Jalisco called Nueva Generación.

Following the enactment of the Fintech Law in 2020, exchanges started reporting transactions exceeding 645 units of account (UMAS, in Spanish), which are equivalent to M$57,804 (US$2,896).

So far, UIF has received close to 3,400 notifications from 23 exchanges that report information to the Mexican Tax Administration Service (SAT), Nieto Castillo said.

After receiving that information, UIF identified at least three potential money laundering cases through the use of cryptocurrencies, the official added.

One of the cases involves Nigerian citizens in Mexico City engaged in cyber fraud, who sent cryptocurrencies back to their home country, Nieto Castillo said.

Mexico’s UIF works under the supervision of the Secretariat of Finance and is in charge of analyzing information related to illicit money operations.

In June, Arturo Herrera, Mexico’s finance minister, said cryptocurrencies aren’t considered to be legal tender assets and aren’t treated as currencies under the country’s current regulatory framework.

Those policies are not expected to be changed in the short term, Herrera stated last month during a presentation to the Financial Action Task Force, a global anti-money laundering group.

Uniswap Says It’s Talking With PayPal, Robinhood and More in Deleted Video

5 years 3 months ago

Uniswap, Ethereum’s largest decentralized exchange by volume, is looking to expand into consumer finance – at least according to a deleted YouTube video from the EthCC conference that was held in Paris last week.

In a talk at the event, Ashleigh Schap, Uniswap’s growth lead, said the team behind the trading protocol is in talks with well-known fintech companies to provide decentralized finance (DeFi) to the mainstream. (In a nod to the virtues of the decentralized web, the video is still available on IPFS.)

“We’re trying to put Uniswap and the rest of DeFi right there in those applications so that we can bring the dream of open, 100% uptime liquidity to the whole world,” Schap said. “PayPal wants to talk to us, E*Trade wants to talk to us, Stripe wants to talk to us.”

Uniswap Labs, EthCC, PayPal, E*Trade and Stripe did not reply to CoinDesk’s requests for comment.

After publication of this article, founder Hayden Adams tweeted that Uniswap Labs has not partnered with the companies mentioned in the EthCC talk. He said the video was deleted at Uniswap’s request because “we thought [it] could be interpreted to suggest we have relationships that we don’t.”

According to Schap’s presentation, Uniswap is looking to build partnerships between consumer finance and DeFi using intermediary firms like Fireblocks, Paxos and Talos. Notably, Paxos built the platform that powers PayPal’s crypto service.

The partnerships could allow DeFi protocols to mesh into existing fintech offerings in a bid to provide a larger variety of assets, instant settlement and 24/7 accessibility.

“We’re talking to everyone about potential stuff, but nothing concrete or specific yet,” said a source familiar with the talks, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Paxos and Fireblocks declined to comment.

TradFi meets DeFi?

Creating liquid markets is a difficult task for traditional exchanges that rely on costly and complex relationships with market makers. Uniswap is known in crypto parlance as an automated market maker, or code on a blockchain that makes it possible for traders to swap assets from various pools of liquidity.

The past year’s growth in the crypto market has shown fintech companies that there is consumer demand for cryptocurrencies and the products that DeFi has made widely available, Schap said at her EthCC presentation.

She added that pitching Uniswap is not as tough of a sell as it was years ago and that firms like PayPal and Stripe are becoming less resistant to what DeFi may offer.

“To stay relevant with their user base is a huge, huge reason that all of these giants are starting to really look closely at working with something like Uniswap,” Schap said, before mentioning speaking with Robinhood.

Traditional finance, however, still has its concerns with blockchain technology and the finality of on-chain transactions, Schap said in Paris. She said Uniswap’s current strategy is surveying the needs of large financial institutions when it comes to know-your-customer laws and any fears associated with transacting directly on a blockchain.

US Marshals Service Chooses Anchorage Digital for Custody of Seized Digital Assets

5 years 3 months ago

The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), a part of the Department of Justice, is now using Anchorage Digital for the custody of its trove of tainted seized digital assets.

In an announcement Wednesday, Anchorage Digital said after a yearlong bidding process the law enforcement agency USMS Asset Forfeiture Division will be using its custodial services.

CoinDesk reported in April that crypto custodian BitGo was set to manage the USMS digital assets under a $4.5 million contract. But that deal appears to have fallen through.

“We are unable to comment on BitGo, but Anchorage participated in more than a yearlong process, and in the end, we were chosen,” a spokesperson from Anchorage told CoinDesk. “There are many factors at play when it comes to a decision like the DOJ’s.”

Among its actions in dismantling organized crime operations, the USMS seizes assets that are the “proceeds of, or [are] used to facilitate, federal crimes.”

Recently, the USMS has seized more digital assets in its work.

Anchorage Digital said that it will also provide “such activities as accounting, customer management, audit compliance, managing blockchain forks, wallet creation, transformation of token assets into coin assets, etc., as well as future actions associated with the virtual currency forfeiture process.”
