FTX Renames Blockfolio Trading App to … FTX

5 years 3 months ago

Fresh on the heels of the largest funding round in crypto history, FTX is getting its branding in order.

The crypto exchange helmed by Sam Bankman-Fried is slapping its name on the Blockfolio trading app it acquired in May 2020 for $150 million, killing a clunky colon in the process.

“The rebrand of FTX: Blockfolio to FTX puts the final cap on our acquisition of Blockfolio, doubling down on our commitment to being the number one crypto trading platform for both retail and institutional users,” Bankman-Fried said in a press release.

FTX’s $900 million Series B valued the company at $18 billion, speaking to investors’ belief in the grand ambitions of an exchange that sprouted up in Hong Kong just two years ago.

Unifying its brand identity would seem to follow suit as FTX looks to rival Coinbase and others for retail traders. The move comes after FTX has spent lavishly on sports sponsorships, putting its three letters on everything from arenas to umpires.

US Sanctions Bitcoin Address Belonging to Suspected Syria-Based Terrorist Fundraiser

5 years 3 months ago

U.S. regulators have sanctioned a bitcoin address belonging to a suspected fundraiser for a Syrian militant group.

Farrukh Furkatovitch Fayzimatov, 26, a citizen of Tajikistan, has been designated a terrorist fundraiser and recruiter by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

Fayzimatov uses social media to recruit members, disseminate propaganda and solicit donations for Hay’et Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), a militant group involved in the Syrian civil war. according to a Treasury Department press release. Fayzimatov reportedly organized community fundraising campaigns to purchase equipment for HTS, including motorbikes.

The first time the Treasury Department added crypto addresses to its list of sanctioned individuals was in 2018, and since then, doing so has become a routine part of OFAC’s designations of international drug dealers, Russian and North Korean hackers and terrorist fundraisers.

The wallet belonging to Fayzimatov has made 24 transactions on the bitcoin blockchain. The wallet, which is now empty, received and sent about 0.25 BTC in total.

Grayscale Bitcoin Trust Discount Narrows as ‘Unlocks’ Pass

5 years 3 months ago

Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) shares have narrowed their discount relative to the underlying cryptocurrency held in the fund – possibly a sign that buyers are using the vehicle to bet on the recent recovery rally in digital-asset markets.

The GBTC shares traded at a discount of 6.6% to net asset value (NAV) on Tuesday, the smallest margin since June 22, based on data provided by the crypto derivatives research firm Skew. The discount had widened to 15% in mid-June.

“The discount seems to have narrowed due to a surge in buying interest in GBTC following weekend’s bitcoin price rally,” Rahul Rai, co-head of Market Neutral at BlockTower Capital, said.

Related: Love Bitcoin? Mine Your Values

Bitcoin crossed above the critical 50-day average resistance level at $35,000 over the weekend and climbed past $40,000 on Monday. At press time, the cryptocurrency was changing hands at around $40,200, up for an eighth straight day in its longest winning streak since December.

Some investors may have snapped up GBTC shares in hopes that the discount will evaporate with a bull revival in bitcoin. In that scenario, the buyers would reap any price gains on bitcoin while pocketing extra profit from a narrowing of the discount. (Grayscale Investments, which manages the trust, is a unit of Digital Currency Group, which also owns CoinDesk.)

“The GBTC discount could be narrowing from investors increasing purchases of GBTC for their tax-advantaged accounts on the belief that BTC will continue to rise with the recent run in price,” Martin Gaspar, research analyst at CrossTower, said.

Related: Israeli Bill Would Force Crypto Investors to Report Holdings Above $61K

Under the rules of the Grayscale trust, accredited investors – typically institutions or rich people – can buy GBTC shares at net asset value by depositing bitcoin or U.S. dollars into the trust and agreeing to hold the shares for at least six months. There was a strong incentive to do so last year and into early 2021, because the shares consistently traded at a premium; investors would lock up bitcoin, get GBTC and liquidate shares at the premium six months later, pocketing extra profit. The trust witnessed record inflows in the December-January period as the premium swelled to 40%.

The shares, however, fell into discount in early February, taking the shine off what was known as the Grayscale carry trade. Inflows into the trust have since dried up and the trust won’t be releasing any shares over coming months. That could be another reason for the narrowing of the discount.

“The main factor is the fact that we don’t have any unlocks occurring in the foreseeable future,” Vetle Lund, an analyst at Arcane Research, said. “Over the last months, massive unlocks have occurred, leading to constant and massive selling pressure of GBTC shares.”

The trust unlocked some 40,000 shares in July. That represents potential selling pressure, because investors have an option to liquidate holdings in the secondary market. However, that selling pressure no longer exists; data from the firm Bybt shows there are no more unlockings at least until early 2022.

Existing GBTC investors may be holding on to their shares – reducing selling pressure from the market – while new investors may be snapping up shares at the discount in hopes that the trust will be converted into an exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the future. Such a conversion might cause the shares to trade more regularly in line with the value of the trust’s bitcoin.

“There may also be speculators buying GBTC in the hopes of profiting off the discount if GBTC is able to convert into an ETF,” CrossTower’s Gaspar said.

Grayscale Investments said in April it was committed to converting the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust into an ETF. The world’s largest digital-assets manager recently hired the New York-based bank BNY Mellon to handle accounting and administrative services for GBTC starting in October. The trust said the relationship will eventually morph into transfer agent and ETF services provider for the GBTC ETF, when and if that is approved by regulators.

Prime Trust Raises $64M to Scale Fintech Infrastructure Biz

5 years 3 months ago

Fintech infrastructure and crypto custody firm Prime Trust is planning a major expansion of its services after a $64 million Series A, the firm announced Wednesday.

Calling it an “institutional round,” CFO Rodrigo Vicuna said the funding will help five-year-old Prime Trust court opportunities across the fintech landscape, not just crypto.

Prime Trust provides payment, settlement, know-your-customer and liquidity APIs that Vicuna said covers “the full infrastructure stack” for fintechs like neo-banks and crypto exchanges.

Related: Crypto Custody Firm Fireblocks Raises $310M at $2B Valuation

The round was led by Mercato Partners’ growth equity fund, Traverse. Nationwide, Samsung Next, Kraken Ventures and Seven Peaks Ventures also participated, with Seven Peaks’ Tom Gonser and Mercato’s Zane Busteed joining Prime Trust’s board.

Nevada-based Prime Trust’s Series A comes as crypto companies of all stripes race for a claim of frenzied venture capital. Startups are scaling while money is cheap under the belief that demand for their services will, with crypto, only grow.

Vicuna said Prime Trust has grown 448% year over year and is now projecting an annual revenue run rate (an estimate of future revenue based on past performance) of $100 million. He said revenue has doubled every year since Prime Trust’s custody wing launched in 2017.

Vicuna said Prime Trust’s “plug and play” APIs are an “explosive” and central part of the business, with 250 million calls by clients including Binance.US, Kraken, Bittrex and Strike per month.

“Every API ping is a client wanting to use our platform for a specific thing,” Vicuna said.

The company is now planning to delve deeper into the alternative investments space through tie-ups with neo-banks and registered investment advisors. The funding will help Prime Trust hire teams and add systems, Vicuna said.

“There’s not a department in the company that doesn’t have agressive hiring plans right now as a result of this funding,” Vicuna said.

UBS Mulls Offering Prime Brokerage Services for Crypto ETPs to European Hedge Funds: Sources

5 years 3 months ago

UBS Group’s prime brokerage unit has started to offer the clearing and settlement of crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs) to a very limited number of clients, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

The Swiss bank is operating a pilot scheme and the matter is being reviewed internally, ahead of a planned wider rollout later in the year, one of the sources said.

UBS isn’t alone in making such a move. Both Goldman Sachs and Bank of America, as reported by CoinDesk last week, have also been offering the clearing and settlement of cryptocurrency ETPs for hedge funds, as financial institutions continue to make tentative steps toward the adoption of crypto. Banks are keen to avoid missing out on a potentially lucrative revenue stream as more clients seek access to the sector.

Bank of America has also approved the trading of bitcoin futures for some clients and is clearing cash-settled contracts.

For UBS, the latest development comes despite the company’s stated caution regarding crypto. In a recent note to clients UBS raised concerns over the nature of crypto markets and recent regulatory developments.

“Regulators have demonstrated they can and will crack down on crypto,” UBS said in a report. “We suggest investors stay clear and build their portfolio around less risky assets.”

The warning followed prior reports that the lender was in the early stages of exploring ways of offering crypto to wealthier clients.

Related: Goldman Sachs Settling Crypto ETPs in Europe: Sources

Obviously, these concerns haven’t prevented some UBS clients from wanting to get in on the action or deterred UBS from considering obliging them.

A UBS spokesperson declined to comment.

Previously, the bank has said that it was monitoring the developments in the field of digital assets closely and that it was most interested in the technology that underpins digital assets, namely distributed ledger technology.

Bitcoin, the world’s oldest crypto, rose back above $40,000 this week, following a subsequently denied report that Amazon was looking to accept bitcoin payments by the end of the year and was also considering minting its own token by 2022.

“Notwithstanding our interest in the space, the speculation that has ensued around our specific plans for cryptocurrencies is not true,” an Amazon spokesperson told CoinDesk by email Monday. Separately, Amazon did say last week that it’s looking to hire a “digital currency and blockchain product lead.”

Luxor Technologies Launches Index of Crypto Mining Stocks

5 years 3 months ago

Luxor Technologies on Wednesday has rolled out a mining stock index that the crypto mining firm said will help quantify the industry’s health on the public markets.

The new index product, which appears on Luxor’s “Hashrate Index,” features 50 publicly traded companies with a stake in the mining game. Miners themselves are heavily represented, but some tech-related companies such as SBI Holdings and Galaxy Digital are also in the mix.

Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Ethan Vera told CoinDesk the “Crypto Miner Stock Index” comes as more mining companies go public. Publicly traded mining companies now power over 15% of the bitcoin network’s hashrate, he said.

Related: Love Bitcoin? Mine Your Values

He said the index “provides miners, investors and the public a gauge on how investors are looking at the space and the sentiment in mining.” The index will be updated quarterly.

The investment world has been chasing mining exposure in recent months amid a wider shakeup in the sector. Last week, Viridi Funds unveiled an exchange-traded fund for bitcoin mining firms going green. That vehicle is to be 80% in green miners and 20% in  semiconductor companies.

Public pensions are also getting in on bitcoin mining stocks as an arm’s-length investment in the crypto economy.

For its part, Luxor’s index will be a mix of pure-play mining firms and the companies supporting them. Ten percent of the initial index is earmarked for chip manufacturers, 5% for foundries and the remaining 85% for the miners themselves.

Diversified crypto companies with a stake in the mining business get 50% less weighted power, according to a press release.

“Bitcoin mining valuations are a high beta play on bitcoin,” Vera said. “If the underlying commodity moves a few percent, the valuations move some multiple of that. These valuations give investors torque on the underlying commodity.”

Biconomy Raises $9M to Make Building Dapps Easier for Developers

5 years 3 months ago

Web 3.0 can be complicated for newcomers to the crypto sector; blockchain transaction platform Biconomy is trying to change that.

Biconomy announced Wednesday that it has raised $9 million in a funding round led by Mechanism Capital, with participation from Coinbase Ventures, Huobi Innovation Labs, CoinFund and other crypto investment firms.

The platform’s blockchain-agnostic network, which includes software development kits (SDKs) and application programming interfaces (APIs), is designed to help developers build decentralized apps (dapps) that are simpler and more user friendly.

Related: Genesis Digital Assets Raises $125M to Fuel US and Nordic Expansion

According to Biconomy CEO Ahmed Al-Balaghi, the steps required to interact with dapps – creating a crypto wallet, purchasing and transferring tokens, and managing gas fees – is enough to put off many first-timers.

Biconomy’s goal, Al-Balaghi says, is to make dapps more user friendly by removing the “friction points” that end users find frustrating, which in turn increases user retention and helps bring new users into the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem.

Since its launch in 2019, Biconomy has processed more than 3.6 million transactions and currently has more than 200 dapp integrations in the pipeline. Al-Balaghi said Biconomy has seen three major categories arise in its dapp portfolio, including decentralized finance (DeFi), gaming and non-fungible token (NFT) applications.

Biconomy will use some of the funds to decentralize its relayer network, including preparing for the launch of its native token, BICO.

Bitcoin rewards company Lolli has raised $10 million in a Series A funding round led by Acrew Capital. Social media influencers Logan Paul, Chantel Jeffries and Sway House were involved in the round.

Lolli will use the funding to expand the company and develop its recently launched mobile app with plans to be more active in the gaming community, according to an announcement on Wednesday.

Lolli CEO Alex Adelman told CoinDesk there has been increased interest in crypto from influencers. Many of those investing in the app are also helping to “distribute bitcoin to as many people as possible” and “spread the message of Lolli,” Adelman said.

“There are a few investors we have such as Up North Media managed by the Hock brothers who specialize in gaming talent,” Adelman told CoinDesk. “They represent Formula, which is one of the biggest gamers in the world, and NoisyButters, Coconut Brah, KO24Q and a lot of great gamers which have come into the round, as well.”

Lolli has direct partnerships with 1,000 merchants that typically offer fiat rewards on various e-commerce sites. Lolli converts that to bitcoin for the crypto-savvy.

The company has 20 employees and is planning to double its head count in the next year by hiring more engineering, marketing and support staff, Adelman said.

Other investors in Lolli include recommitments from early investors, including entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian’s venture-capital firm Seven Seven Six , Third Kind Venture Capital, Gabriel Leydon, who’s the CEO and founder of video-game company Machine Zone, and Forerunner Ventures. In March, Lolli raised $5 million with contributions from tennis star Serena Williams’ Serena Ventures.

Crypto CEOs Are Still Six-Figures Bullish on Bitcoin’s Price

5 years 3 months ago

Related: Israeli Bill Would Force Crypto Investors to Report Holdings Above $61K

We remain bullish for the remainder of the year. The mining crackdown in China has impacted the price heavily as miners migrate and hash power has dropped, but longer term, this is bullish and will make Bitcoin more resilient. We are still forecasting BTC to be around $175,000 at the peak of the current cycle into 2022.

The regulatory scrutiny of the industry at present will also lead to longer-term frameworks being put in place and regulatory-focused players like ourselves providing on ramps for institutions. Our road map for the rest of the year is focused on derivative product rollout, a core requirement for the majority of institutions that will lead to reduced volatility and even further adoption.

Bitcoin Returns Near $40K Resistance; Support at $36K

5 years 3 months ago

Bitcoin (BTC) buyers defended support during Asia hours as the short-term uptrend persists. The cryptocurrency is near $40,000 resistance at press time and is up about 6% over the past 24 hours.

The previous attempt at $40,000 on Monday triggered overbought readings, which preceded a near 10% pullback. However, buyers have been active at lower support around $34,000-$36,000.

  • The relative strength index (RSI) is overbought on the four-hour chart, which could trigger some profit taking.
  • Bitcoin is roughly 20% above the 100-period moving average on the four-hour chart. The most recent above average extension was seen in mid-June as buyers failed to break above $40,000 resistance.
  • Downside momentum has slowed considerably over the past month as bitcoin continued to hold $30,000 support. The current rally could encourage further buying once oversold signals appear on the weekly chart.

XRP Cheers Ripple’s Japan-Philippines Corridor as Bitcoin Breaks Above $40K Ahead of Fed

5 years 3 months ago

XRP, a cryptocurrency used by Ripple in its payments network, rallied to a five-week high on Wednesday after the company said it is targeting the $1.8 billion Filipino Remittance Corridor.

The cryptocurrency changed hands at $0.74 during the European hours, hitting the highest level since June 21 and representing a 13% gain on the day, according to CoinDesk 20 data.

Buyers stepped in around $0.65 after Ripple announced that Japan’s money-transfer provider SBI Remit, Philippines mobile-payments service Coins.ph and crypto exchange SBI VC Trade have teamed up to carry remittance payments from Japan to the Philippines using Ripple’s on-demand liquidity (ODL) service.

Related: Bitcoin Returns Near $40K Resistance; Support at $36K

Filipinos based in Japan send almost $2 billion to their home country every year. According to Ripple, it’s a costly affair because Japan has one of the highest remittance costs in the world. “It’s almost twice as much as the average of all the G-8 countries,” Ripple noted.

ODL uses Ripple’s xRapid cross-border payment service and allows customers to transfer funds using XRP, making transactions relatively faster and cheaper.

“This is Ripple’s first On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) service implementation in Japan, setting the stage to drive more adoption of crypto-enabled services in the region,” Ripple said. “By leveraging the digital asset XRP to eliminate pre-funding, the two companies can also free up capital and accelerate the expansion of their own payments businesses.”

The news comes on the heels of a long-standing battle between Ripple and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that weighed heavily on XRP at the end of the last year.

Related: Ether Trading Volume Surged 1,400% in First Half as Institutions Took Exposure: Coinbase

In December, the SEC filed a case against Ripple for raising $1.3 billion by selling XRP in unregistered securities offerings. XRP fell by 67% to $0.21 in December before rallying to $1.9 in April this year amid the broader market bull frenzy. However, when bitcoin took a big hit in May, that also punctured the bull run in XRP and other coins. XRP recently hit lows near $0.50.

Bitcoin is trading above $40,000 at press time, up 1.72% on the day. Sentiment has recently flipped in favor of the bulls, and some investors have been snapping up calls, or bullish bets, in anticipation of continued upside. Stronger gains could be in the offing as the Federal Reserve (Fed) is unlikely to bolster concerns of early unwinding, or tapering, of its stimulus program later today.

“Policymakers will likely continue to warn over the recent move higher in U.S. inflation, which last month jumped to fresh multiyear highs,” Matt Ryan, a senior market analyst at Ebury, said. “The committee will, however, also probably highlight the downside risks to growth posed by the latest wave of virus infection triggered by the aggressive spread of the delta variant.”

Ryan doesn’t foresee a formal announcement on QE tapering until the September meeting, when fresh macroeconomic and interest rate projections will be released.  Bitcoin will likely face selling pressure if the Fed’s monetary policy statement drops hints of an early taper.

Ether Trading Volume Surged 1,400% in First Half as Institutions Took Exposure: Coinbase

5 years 3 months ago

The ether market grew three times faster than bitcoin in the first six months of the year as large investors diversified into the native token of Ethereum’s blockchain, according to crypto exchange Coinbase’s half-yearly review published on Monday.

  • Ether’s trading volume totaled $1.4 trillion in the January-to-June period, a 1,461% rise from $92 billion observed in first-half 2020.
  • Trading volumes in bitcoin, the biggest cryptocurrency, rose 489% to $2.1 trillion during the same period.
  • Ether also outshone bitcoin, the S&P 500 and gold in price performance, rallying 210% over the six months ended June 30. Bitcoin rose 20%, the S&P 500 gained 14% and gold fell 6.7%.
  • “Many of our largest institutional clients, including hedge funds, endowments, and corporates, increased or added first-time exposure to ETH in H1, believing the asset has long-term staying power tantamount to BTC’s, while playing a differentiated role in their portfolios,” Coinbase’s report said.
  • The report cited the explosive growth of Ethereum-based decentralized finance (DeFi), optimism that Ethereum’s transition to a proof-of-stake mechanism will turn ether into a yielding asset and the deflationary impact of the EIP-1559 upgrade as reasons for ether’s price rally.
  • The Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP)-1559 upgrade scheduled for Aug. 4 will activate a mechanism to take a variable amount of ETH out of circulation each time a transaction is executed. That will curb supply growth and may give ether a store-of-value-like appeal.

Mining Difficulty Expected to Increase for the First Time Since China Crackdown

5 years 3 months ago

Bitcoin’s mining difficulty may be set to increase for the first time since China’s crackdown on crypto mining in May.

A rapid expansion of mining facilities in North America and the return of Chinese miners through overseas hosting sites are two major factors that will drive up mining difficulty, according to industry pros.

Mining difficulty is a metric to describe how hard it is to mine a block and get rewards in bitcoin. An increase in mining difficulty requires a miner to use more computing power to earn bitcoin, which reduces the miner’s profit margin. The more mining machines are online, the higher the mining difficulty and the more secure the Bitcoin network..

Related: Stronghold Digital Mining Files for $100M IPO

Mining difficulty has seen a continuous decrease since the Chinese central government called for local authorities to shut off bitcoin mining operations across the country on May 21. The latest bi-weekly difficulty level posted on July 17 is the fourth downward adjustment since the crackdown.

“For the first time since China’s hashrate went lights out, we’re anticipating next week’s adjustment to be positive, a roughly 1.75% increase,”  according to Seattle-based mining Luxor’s newsletter on Saturday.

Even before China’s crackdown, big North American mining companies such as Marathon and Riot were already expanding their operations due to bitcoin’s historic bull run in early 2021, Luxor CEO Nick Hansen said.

“While we saw the big hashrate drop across the network during that time, other miners were also deploying new hardware,” Hansen said. “It was just drowned out by the disconnections in China.”

Related: Justin Sun Joins Research Project at Communist Party School

Marathon said it entered a binding letter of intent with the U.S.-based miner hosting services provider Compute North in May to run about 73,000 bitcoin miners as part of the hosting firm’s 300-megawatts (gw) data center in Texas. The Las Vegas-based company claimed its hashrate would reach 10.37 EH/s after all its mining machines are fully deployed.

“I am personally expecting a positive difficulty adjustment next month because the displaced miners (from China) have since found new homes and they aren’t coming offline anytime soon,” said Azam Roslan, senior sales associate at Wattum, a New York-based mining company that offers hosting and mining machine brokerage services.

Most of the growth that will drive up mining difficulty in the coming months would still be from the North American miners who planned expansion ahead of Beijing’s crackdown last year or in early 2021, Daniel Frumkin, researcher at Prague-based mining company Slush Pool, said.

“The Chinese miners that were forced offline in the crackdown and did not find capacity available right away are more likely to take more than three months to get back online because, in most cases, they have to collaborate on building out more infrastructure,” Frumkin said.

Closing in

The positive adjustment could be the beginning of a drastic surge in hashrate in the coming year.

“I think we have reached that minimum low difficulty point and now we are going to start to grow unless there are other big government shakeups or changing bitcoin price,” Hansen said.

So while Beijing’s crackdown on crypto mining might be a disaster for Chinese miners, it could be a windfall for the miners in the rest of the world.

Mining companies in North America and central Asia have raked in wide profit margins due to the low mining difficulty. However, the window of opportunity is slowly closing on miners as mining companies across the world are scrambling to build out new hosting sites to run mining machines.

“We are a long, long way away from where we were before the crackdown, but my guess is that adjustments will be positive for a long time,” Frumkin said.

Hasen expects that in about 12 months hashrate would return to the level before China’s crackdown, based on the average lead time to build out new mining facilities to host both new machines and those that come from the Chinese miners.

“I do not think the positive adjustment is just a blip and we will see significant growth and probably exceed the all-time high before the crackdown given how much new capacities are being built,” Hansen said.

Robinhood Reportedly Testing Feature to Protect Crypto Investors From Volatility

5 years 3 months ago

Zero-fee trading platform Robinhood is working on a new feature that will help protect users from crypto price volatility, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Bloomberg’s report, which was based on iOS developer Steve Moser’s analysis of new code contained in a beta test version of the Robinhood iPhone app, claims Robinhood is developing a new feature called “price volatility protection,” which is aimed at reducing the impact of crypto price volatility on users. According to the report, the code contains a message that reads: “To protect your orders against price volatility, we may sometimes skip your recurring orders or buy less than your chosen amount.”

A Robinhood spokeswoman declined to explain or comment on the potential new feature.

Robinhood is also testing an option called “round up investments” that will allow users to purchase specific stocks with “spare change.” Whether this money will come from rounded-up debit and credit card purchases as done by competitors like Acorn is unclear.

Robinhood, which is going public this week, struggled with partial outages during the dogecoin spike in May, leading to criticism and a loss of confidence from its user base as well as regulators.

Crypto has become an increasingly important part of Robinhood’s business model, with approximately 17% of its Q1 revenue coming from crypto transactions—up from 3% in Q1 of last year.

In a virtual roadshow for investors last week, Robinhood’s CEO Vlad Tenev said that expanding and improving the company’s crypto offerings and the app’s security, which Robinhood was recently fined for, is a priority.

Bitcoin took a breather on Tuesday after a near-20% price rally over the past few days. The cryptocurrency declined from $40,000 resistance as Amazon denied rumors it will accept bitcoin payments. Bitcoin was trading around $37,000 at press time and is down about 4% over the past 24 hours.

Technical data suggests lower support around $34,000 could stabilize the current pullback.

“Going forward, we expect bitcoin to keep pushing higher and test the upper end of the $30,000-$42,000 trading range,” wrote Pankaj Balani, CEO of Delta Exchange, in an email to CoinDesk. “We expect to see similar moves in altcoins, too, led by ether.”

Some analysts expect further upside in bitcoin as institutional buyers find value opportunities across cryptocurrencies.

“As institutional investors have been waiting on the sideline to take positions, the current market move could be sustained during the week” wrote Elie Le Rest, partner at crypto hedge fund Exo Alpha, in an email to CoinDesk.

The short-squeeze rally triggered the most active trading session this quarter in crypto markets, according to data from Skew.

The increase in volumes has been driven by large buyers, typically institutions that have waited for a more directional trend on bitcoin since the end of May, according to Le Rest.

Brief return to profitability

Over 2 million BTC have returned to profitability based on their realized price after bitcoin rallied over the past few days, according to data from Glassnode.

“This indicates that 11.2% of the circulating supply has an on-chain cost basis between $29K and $38K,” Glassnode tweeted Monday.

Bitcoin drawdown

Bitcoin’s drawdown, or the percentage decline from the peak near $63,000, narrowed to around 40% over the past week. Typically, drawdowns exceeding 50% indicate the start of a bearish trend, similar to 2014 and 2017-2018.

The current drawdown suggests bitcoin’s intermediate-term downtrend is stabilizing given the sharp price bounce over the past few days. However, drawdowns can last much longer towards 70%-80%, which previously occurred near bear market troughs.

Options less bearish

Bitcoin’s one-month put-call skew, which measures the cost of puts, or bearish bets, relative to calls, or bullish bets, has come off sharply to 2% from 13% late last week, according to data provided by crypto derivatives analytics firm Skew. The one-week put-call skew has declined from 13% to 5%.

The narrowing of the spread between prices for puts and calls essentially means investors are no longer seeking downside hedges in anticipation of an extended price drop, wrote CoinDesk’s Omkar Godbole.

Bitcoin futures back in contango

“After Monday’s short squeeze, some unregulated futures are back in a 10% contango, but the basis varies across the various venues, and the institutional traders still seem cautious,” according to a Tuesday report by Arcane Research.

Contango, a term used to describe the bullish arbitrage, occurs when the bitcoin futures price is higher than the spot price. Since April, bitcoin’s contango has narrowed as bullish sentiment waned.

“We’re still far away from the extreme contango of 50% from mid-April, but it is concerning that the traders in the unregulated offshore futures once again outpace the CME traders,” Arcane wrote.

“The growing contango occurs as traders with a short bias are reluctant to re-enter short positions after Monday’s massive short squeeze.”

The Tether put

With largest stablecoin, USDT, in the news again for inauspicious reasons, worried perma-bears might now be searching for the crypto market equivalent of a credit default swap – a derivatives instrument that allows buyers to bet on another trading counterparty’s creditworthiness.

The answer to that might be a put option on tether, essentially a bet that the stablecoin’s price will fall below its ostensible redemption value of $1. Some traders have been actively scouting around for such a trade, according to some players in digital-asset markets.

Although market makers have seen demand for a tether put, fulfilling that demand is difficult, wrote CoinDesk’s Omkar Godbole. Currently, there is no active market for put options on tether. Exchanges don’t find a business case there because, technically, there is no exposure to offset. Participants fearing a tether collapse need to find a put seller in over-the-counter (OTC) markets or approach market makers. That’s a costly affair.

The solution may be dealing in a tether put at a much lower or out-of-the-money strike below $1.00. That would cost relatively less than buying a put at $1.00.

  • Senator Warren fires on crypto again: Longtime crypto skeptic Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is urging the U.S. government yet again to form a regulatory strategy to “mitigate the growing risks that cryptocurrencies pose to the financial system.” In an open letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on July 26, Warren urged the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC) Yellen leads to bring about a “coordinated and holistic” response to the risks of crypto. Warren cited decentralized finance (DeFi), crypto-enabled cyber attacks and unique threats posed by stablecoins as risks to the financial system.

Eco is part of a wave of fintechs hawking bank-like services to a fiat audience – but one of the few with a crypto back-end: It generates returns on clients’ deposits by lending them out to institutions in the form of stablecoin USDC. That model may come under scrutiny as world regulators probe the stablecoin sector with new force, reports CoinDesk’s Danny Nelson.
